I was running yesterday and somehow dropped my black 80 G ipod classic to the ground pretty hard.

but thankfully, other than a few scratches on the back, everything still works fine.

I'm wondering if the hd of the ipod is solid state? is that why there's no recognizable damage so far?

No, the iPod Classic is hard drive based, not SSD like the iPod Nano or iPod Touch. I'd say you were lucky :p.

I dropped 30 gig video iPod yesterday morning getting into my car, and it took a good three bounces before I grabbed. Aside from a few scratches, thing works perfect.

Dropped my 40gb iPod, while it was off, and the drive shattered. I am never buying another mp3 player with a spinning hard drive, I love my 8gb Nano!

actually i am experiencing a software problem now with my 80G ipod.

when i plugged the usb cords into my macbook today, it read:

The ipod could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1429).

is there anything i can do? should i reformat the ipod hard drive?

    Thanks :)

Hmm...it may be that drop then. If you disconnect it, does it still play and work fine? But anyhow, yes, reformat!

I recently reformatted my 30GB iPod from Windows to Mac, and something's wrong with my drive - it will update a few hundred songs, then stop, saying that the drive could not be read or written to. I've restored it several times, and I'm about to give up at just get a new one. I'd really LOVE a 16GB nano (I wonder when they're coming out?), but I guess I'll settle for an 8GB one for now. I'm done with those tiny spinning drives, I think.

Teehee, I've dropped my iPod mini several hundred times now, still in perfect working condition.

Alright, so it's a tad scratched up, but what do you expect? It's nearly 3 years old. :p

i have a 32 GB SSD in my ipod... that was expensive as hell.

i've been selling ipods and laptops like crazy on ebay. i might go that route. if you can get the thing to restore and load up your songs, just sell it as used and get rid of the thing.

Is it possible to get a 16 GB SSD into an iPod nano? I really wish I could get that size, that would be perfect for me.

That's pretty sleazy. You should only sell it as broken/ for parts if it's not a working iPod.

    why is ssd so expensive?

aren't they just a bunch of flash drives put together?

Flash drives are different from SSDs. Mainly, they're much faster and they won't wear out after a while.
