Hi guys my friend is pretty tight on cash and is trying to sell me her imac2008. She told me 100$ would suffice. I dont know what its worth because its in pretty rough shape and there are lines in the screen. also its an old model and i do not know what to do with it as i have 2 laptops on hand already.

    Questions
    1) How much is it worth?
    2) How much do you think the repair will run me for the screen?
    3) If you were in my shoes would you take it?
    4) What can you do with it realistically?

    I'd pass.

It would likely be slow and power inefficient and it might generate a moderate amount of heat. I have a 2010 iMac which my wife uses and it definitely uses more power and puts out more heat than I'd like but she won't give it up.

Definitely not worth it. Lines on the screen like that are indicative of a problem with the GPU. While I know some iMac models had replaceable GPUs, I'm not sure about this one. In any case, the part would be difficult to obtain and replace, not to mention expensive, especially because that hardware would be considered obsolete by Apple's standards.

Thanks. I was thinking too if something inside is wrong then its probably gonna be expensive. I was hoping it was just something with the wiring being loose. I will offer this to my dad as an aesthetic for a model house.

Haha. I think its still worth something. Aesthetically. Imagine it in a table ready to use, that is of course until someone uses it and realize how slow the thing is lol

if its the GPU issue I think it is also keep an eye out for burning circuit boards. might make a great book end though
