Anyone got a recommendation for an iTunes music codec? Sadly, my iPhone is starting to get full and I'd like to free up some space. Right now I have my music in 128 bit Mp3 format. I tried to go down to 64 bit, while I'm not really an audiophile, I could tell the difference. I like 64 bit wma, but that's obviously not an option at the moment. Thanks for any help.

128kbps is the bottom of the barrel unless you have hearing damage.

64 bit wma sounds as good as to me as 128 bit Mp3 and no I don't have hearing damage, at least not yet. I am looking to make my music collection smaller because I'm running out of space. That's why I wanted to know if there was another file format which could do this without too much sound quality loss.

I really don't know how you can not tell the difference, but be that as it may, I don't believe there is unless you want to try using AAC with a 64 bit encode. Something to keep in mind also is that every time you transcode your music, you also lose more quality via the transcoding process.

My strong advice to you would be to just keep your favorites on your device. If you have an iPhone you can also set up a streaming media server on your home computer to stream your music to the iPhone via simplifymedia's app. Of course it also works with the Touch but you need wifi access for that.

32kbps and 64kbps is generally held over for talk and podcasts because of the huge quality loss involved. Personally, I can't handle anything less than 192kbps because of the loss of quality in the high and low tonal ranges. I would think that even with the stock buds from Apple that the quality difference would be quite noticeable, and with even a modest upgrade to something like the Sennheiser CX300's the quality difference would be astronomical. My intent is not to insult you, but to inform you that you are really not hearing the music the way it was meant to be even at 128kbps.

I used to be the same, ie choosing less quality to save space. That was years ago when hard drives were more expesive. I really regreat it now, there are a whole bunch of albums that I don't listen too cause they were ruined by ripping at below 128kbs. I would really suggest trying out smart playlists, etc, your music collection will only get bigger, and in a few years u will have a bigger iPod or whatever anyways.

unless you are using just notebook speakers, there should be quite a big difference, you can definitely start getting some wierd digital artifact,

    aac is an excellent format
