There hasn't been a discussion thread about this yet so I'll start it!

iTunes 8 is pretty cool, not a huge update but still one. NBC's back on iTunes, I'm happy about that!

    Just downloaded it.

New grid view isn't much of an offering as far as improvement goes.

One thing that iTunes is missing and its really very very simple is a dynamic playlist window somewhere on the iTunes interface that can be drag&dropped to.... maybe some day.

I'm liken' the new genius feature, it took forever to process but the result were pretty good on the few track I tried and its super easy to use. Not to fused on the album grid view, but then I don't use cover flow much either.... mainly cause I have way too much music and its quicker to look in list view.
but all in all a happy chappy here!

What's interesting is the slight changes to the iTune's UI like the scroll bar buttons and background being black-grey instead of metal grey. Since the iTunes UI usually serves as a demo for future Apple OS UIs like how the iTunes 7 UI basically became the new Finder in Leopard, we'll probably see something similar in Snow Leopard. And with the changes to the scroll bar the last vestiges of Aqua will probably be gone in 10.6.

And another thing in terms of transitioning, while support for 10.3.9 was dropped in iTunes beginning with the iPhone related versions, Quicktime was still available for 10.3.9 up to the previous 7.5. Now the new Quicktime 7.5.5 that ships alongside iTunes 8 no longer supports 10.3.9 and with iLife and iWork no longer supporting Panther and security updates no longer being offered, I guess Panther is truly EOL'd.

It'll run in 64-bit with the 64-bit installer, but it then defaults to running in a 32-bit environment.

Come on, Apple! I want a 64-bit iTunes!

Another UI thing - normally, when you click off iTunes, and are in other windows, the itunes stays about the same color, or just a tad lighter. Now, when you click on another window (if you can still see iTunes behind it), it turns LIGHT grey. Just a neat feature I noticed right away. :p

Personally, I end up searching artists, because at times, I like listening to only one artist - so I'm really enjoying that. :)

The 64 bit version they offer on the download page seems a tad flakey to me, but no worse than any other iTunes for windows. They've all been flakey. As far as I know they still have not fixed the "Can't download more than one podcast at a time" bug that's been around for a couple of years.

How do I set up an account for free so I can download the album art? I don't like having to enter my CC information and not even be using it. I entered it as it says they won't charge me unless I buy something. I hope that's true.

How do I tell iTunes to download the cover art?

Hmm, Genius is a good marketing idea, but for me, it doesn't work so much. My MSI has 741 songs (where I sync my iPods, but most of my music is stored elsewhere). Exactly 23 of them are recognized by the Genius service. It doesn't do Beatles songs or Indian songs, so....that cuts most of it out....

I'm starting to like Genius... I have too much music to go through, and 80% of it (12,000 or so songs) I've never listened to, so this could help me find some new stuff.

Maybe it works for like, actual albums, but for movie songs (in the south, theres film songs, and classical music - nothing else) it doesn't get anything.

I'm liking the iTunes 8 'experience' (sarcasm). I don't use the visualiser on any itunes but the album view section is much improved. That is if you remember to rename all you compilation albums in the list view to he same album/artist. If ya don't you end up with 20 albums listed from the 1. What I can't get my head around is coverflow still only being used by album and not allowing to sort by artist. The plugin Cover Stream can do it and is much more useful to me than coverflow so why can't Apples own baby. Maybe I should phone tech support and ask for iTunes support like this guy. You gotta read this

    http://www.zug.com/pranks/riaa/index3.html

Seriously I have to ring them anyway and I work in tech support so I have to deal with retards like this. Its a chance to get my own back. If you not in tech support heres my advice, DON'T EVER START.

Didn't iTunes have the mini-store thing which would recommend similar tunes to the song your currently listening to? How is the Genius feature any different than that?

I was kind of hoping for a subscription service to surface for iTunes. No dice. Apple is making a fortune on individual sales.

It's good that NBC is back on iTunes. That's a major plus there.

Is there a addon for Vista for iTunes that will give me album art?

I know someone posted up a addon for Mac earlier in this thread and I was wondering if there's a Vista type?

EDIT: Here's not a bad list of addons. I'm installing moreTunes now... hopefully it'll work well.

iTunes for windows isn't really set up for add-ons or plugins. Apple puts just enough effort into iTunes for windows to sell more hardware, and that's it. It's been a major beef i've had with Apple for years now.

There might be, but I did it the old fashioned way. I went to amazon and pulled it off there. :p Though that was before I got MP3Tag. If I'd used Mp3Tag first it would have been a lot easier to use a program.

There definitely is a 64-bit version for Windows. See http://www.apple.com/itunes/download for more.

All Apple apps for Mac are already natively 64-bit as well, so I'm not sure what you're talking about...

For a major new release I was expecting a little bit more that a visual face lift and Genius. The fact that they did not make a true 64 bit version for Vista was incompetent and another ploy to try to make mac look better that Vista. Come on Stevo, dont be hatin.

iTunes is not 64 bit. The installer for x64 is 64bit. iTunes itself is still 32bit.

I understand that. Apple has a 32 bit installer and a 64 bit installer. OS X 10.5 is 64 bit and Vista is 32 and 64 bit. I am pretty sure that the mac version is 64 bit but the Vista version is 32. They need to get with the times and do 64 bit across the board and also maybe think about a Linux version at the same time. Wait, Linux might be to much competition for Apple.
