How durable and scratch-resistant is it? Does it make sense to protect it with a screen protector?
-
It is scratch proof. No point protecting the screen, and you couldnt cause its touch screen.
Durable? Idk... Maybe several drops? But, dont blame me if it breaks.
Anyhow; the back isnt scratchproof, its made out metal. -> Scratches a lot, so better get a rubber case for the back.

My iPhone's screen has a pretty deep scratch on it, small but definitely there(I can feel it). No idea how it got there
-
I think I will buy a protector. Are there any differences in quality?
-
hhhe someone said if you drop it high enough the glass will break
-
LOL sometimes scratches just appear out of nowhere
-
Well, it has to be material that is harder than glass...so usually its hard to scratch it but sand can make scratches on it as sand is hard. You can consider a transparent screen protector just to be safer, but I wouldn't worry too much.
But as ADeadRat said, the chrome back of the iPod Touch is highly prone to scratches. I wished Apple would drop the chrome back already. -
Yeah you should see my 3rd gen nano. Sooo scratched.

stealthsniper96 What Was I Thinkin'?
OP- check out shieldzone.com
they make good quality stuff. -
Still works just fine and dandy as long as it stays firm against the touch panel. -
Glass is NOT scratch proof. Glass has a hardness of 6-7 on the Moh's hardness scale, and anything above a 7 will surely scratch/damage the screen of an iphone. i.e, iron, titanium, steel will not scratch glass - the common metals that you may come in contact with your iphone. On the other hand, steel alloy (hardened steel), quartz, or diamond will scratch glass if enough pressure is applied.
Either way, I don't think getting a screen protector would help much since the screen protector are usually made of plastic. In any case, if you drive a diamond ring across your iphone screen, it would just penetrate the screen protector and damage the screen. -
The touch screen is about as scratch resistant as glass can be.. Which is pretty good for everyday use. I don't think a standard plastic film screen protector would help it at all. I carry mine in my front pocket every day, no scratches yet.
I recommend the rubber Incase cover, it's very nice and will protect it from short drops, which is the main danger to the iPod touch. -
I am 100% convinced that Apple does this because they are in cahoots with case makers.
The scratch magnet of a polished steel back is a joke. The worst idea i've ever seen in a portable. Pathetic. -
To be honest I don't really care about scratches on the back. It's a commodity. Anyway the screen is important to me.
-
This was mentioned in this thread, but I also recommend the Invisible Shield screen protector. It's sort of a flexible plastic film that's highly resistant to scratches. I've installed this product on my phone, digital camera, and Mac.
A bit on the expensive side, but it's worth it. -
Around ₤4 for the Touch in the UK. If it does help it's worth it. I just wonder if I should buy a glossy one or a matte one...
I have one on my PSP because it's screen is very soft. -
get invisible shield.

Pretty much what every has said so far is true.
The screen is quite durable and it doesn't show scratches at all. However, the back chrome is very prone to scratches. I would most definitely get a case if you were planning to get an iPod touch.
