    Since iPhone 3G was just announced, I was just wondering when the expected date for the next generation iPod Touch would be. I'm looking to purchase one and was wondering if I should wait.

    Personally I would just buy a cheap unlocked iPhone. I've owned an iphone and an ipod touch, and the iphone wasn't much more expensive, at ALL.

    Just recommending it to ya', but no I don't know when it's coming out.

    The 3G iPhone is not a new generation, just a facelift. Wont see any major changes in iPod/iPhone until the actual next gen. Probably see some hints of it end of 09` and into 2010. With a release holiday 2010/early 2011 (?)

    Being 3G capable is quite a big step from the 2G peice o' sh*te it was before. Great phone, but with 2G capabilities, it was lacking and FAR behind other phones that are comparable.

    3G is a big step for the iPhone, trust me (having used one, and it's SLLOOWWWWWWW 2G GSM standard). And it looks better too!

    I don't understand this new pricing. Correct me if I'm wrong but the iPhone is now only $199 for the 8GB version and the iPod touch is still $199 for the 8GB version. WTF.. shouldn't they be upgrading capacity in the iPod touch or something?

    the iphone could be free, it wouldn't really matter. you have to buy it with something like a $1000 service contract anyway. the ipod touch is $200 and done.

    but still.. for the technology/price you get a lot more on the iPhone (camera being an example). Just doesn't make sense to buy an iPod Touch now. I'm guessing that Apple will drop the price or increase capacity on the iPod Touch very soon :confused:

    i believe the '3G' aspect of the new iphone is for data transfer only (internet).. the hardware does not support video chat on 3g so it doesn't have a front camera.. for video chat u'll need some 3rd party software for video chat and the following accessory:

    you...............iPhone...................... iMirror
    .. O -----------------------------------|
    --|-- .... camera || screen <-----------|
    .. | ............side || side .................... |
    . /\

    Legend:
    -- line of sight
    .. empty space/space holder for ascii art

    now u can video chat over 3g!

    There is no front camera for the new iPhone, unfortunately, it was only rumoured. As for iPod Touch, expect it to be revamped along with the entire iPod line usually around September. Expect it to always be a little behind the iPhone though, as that's the iPhone's selling point.

    Like others have said, the ipod touch is $299, the 8gig is $199.

    And yes, the iphone 3g has no front facing camera.

    Doesn't support video calling. Supports other 3G features, which is a HUGE boost for the iphone. Now it MIGHT be able to somewhat compete with higher end phones like the N95/96, N82, etc etc.

    iPhone is great, really it is, but specs-wise, the N95 is far superior (5mp camera, A-GPS, also has an accelerometer, video calling (secondary camera), 3.5G capabilities, A2DP (stereo bluetooth), longer talk time (WCDMA rated at 9 hours), and a lot more.

    Like I said, great phone, but it LOOKS WAY better than what's actually inside.

    I wouldn't expect the iPod Touch's price to be dropped while the Free iPod promotion is going on.

    I think its the level of software quality that makes the iPhone blow most other phones clearly out of the water; and now with mobil Me + push notifications its even better.

    I would expect a front-facing, low MegaPixel camera in the next iPhone for sure. I think Apple is going to put the P.A. Semi guys/gals to work on building the internals for the next iPhone, possible even some dedicated hardware to accelerate the H.264 encoding needed to allow video chat over 3G possible.

    The IPod Touch did not get a price drop. It still sells for $300 on Apple's online store. Only the IPhone got the price drop to $200. I would be up in arms if the IPod Touch 8GB got the price drop, as I only recently got my IPod Touch.

    From what I see the N95 is about $600???

    And a quick look at CNET says this:
    "The bad: The N95 lacks support for U.S. 3G networks; standby battery life is poor; and performance is somewhat sluggish. The hardware feels a bit cheap, and the sliding mechanism could be more secure. It's also very expensive."

    Wow...What's that all about?

    September is when the iPods are usually refreshed, so yeah. I would say don't expect any major iPod Touch redesign though...Apple usually keeps designs a year or two, except for the iPod Nano, which has changed every year. I would expect the iPod Touch to have minor changes (like hardware volume control like on the iPhone), but nothing radical.

    Some of us are fine with the 2.5G version especially since 3G isn't available everywhere. Enjoy paying $30/month.

    When you get the iphone you have to activate within 30 days with a service plan from AT&T, or so AT&T and Apple claim are the new rules for the 3G iPhone. So up front the touch and phone cost the same but you have to make monthly payments for the phone + data plan.

    It sounds like AT&T subsidized the price of the iPhone, the cost for us is we have to activate or return it. AT&T has nothing to do with the touch so it remains unchanged.

    ??? It's easy to find an unlocked 8 GB N95 for 400~500....

    An unlocked 8 GB iPhone goes for about 400~500 as well.

    I would take the N95 any day of the week. And besides, here in Canada, we have the N95, works great on 3G networks. AND you can get some that will work on the 3G network, you just need to know what you're doing with phones.
