new user of iPhoto here: i have a new panasonic lumix TZ10 and have connected to iPhoto and all images are uploading with no problems.
then i check through the photos on the macbook and delete the ones i do not need.
is there some mechanism where i can then sync back to the camera and delete the original also?

    why ''of course not''?
seems like a reasonable thing to do. 3rd party sync app maybe?
i can take out the sd card and sync that?

It all depends on what you want to do with the pictures. If you want to just use the camera like a flash drive its easy enough to export the files to it. If you want the files to be viewable on the camera like they never left it can be a bit more tricky.

If you want option 2: I suggest playing around with a single photo the first time. The first thing you need to do is plug in the camera to sync with iPhoto but don't actually sync it just yet. The camera's storage should be mounted on the desktop and you need to explore it to see where exactly the picture is stored. Once you have that written down you can go ahead and sync with iPhoto and delete the photo from the camera in the process. To get the pictures back to the camera you need to go into the event they were imported into and select the pictures you want. The in the file menu choose export which will open the export options. I'm not sure about your camera but with my Nikon D40x I use the file "kind" original instead of JPEG. Once you choose your settings hit the export button which will open up the window asking where to put the exported files. On the left side you should see your camera's mounted memory which you can then open up and select the folder where the pictures are usually stored on the camera. Once you select the correct location click on OK and the files will export back to the camera.

    Good luck.

Can't you just elect the option to not delete pictures you're importing to iPhoto from the camera? That would keep the photos on the camera and you could delete what you wanted to from the camera rather than from iPhoto.

I think the reasoning is that its easier to tell if a picture is wanted or not on a larger screen than a camera.

yes, thats right. i have maybe 6 shots all looking the same on the camera but slight differences in exposure or sometimes just someones eyes closed.
now i am thinking more about this, it is probably not practical to do exactly what i want.
ideally it would be nice to have the option/question to delete from the camera when i delete from iphoto. i always have a full (backup) copy of the sd card anyway, just in case and theres always the trash if i make a mistake.
i do like to keep some of the good pics on the camera.
    thanks for help guys.

I have an external drive and a backup on a network drive for my photos (over 100Gb) worth right now. I take multiple shots as well. I figure I can delete extra shots but I can't recreate a moment once it's gone. I went to Alaska last month and took 2000+ pictures ranging from still shots to ones taken on planes, trains and buses. I used the iPad to view them on a larger screen and deleted stuff daily so I ended up with about 1300 by the time I got home. I then pared them down to about 800 of the very best shots to keep.

It never crossed my mind to put any of the pictures back on the camera though. Then again I usually have the iphone or ipad with me that are full of pictures.
