So my mom got her first macbook a few months ago and just had a crash of iPhoto and it lost all of her images that had been imported (not including those that were migrated from her PC). The guy at the apple store was unable to locate the files.

I've got some ideas for data recovery, but am really a PC guy. Am quick to learn Apple and solve problems, but figured it best to ask in a group of people with more "know how".

Any thoughts to share on recovering the files (free)? I'm thinking Ultimate Boot CD. I'll have access to HDD enclosures and a Windows based laptop if necessary.

    Thanks!

In Finder, go to your home directory > photos

right click iPhoto Library > show package contents

look in the folders originals, modified, and data

alternately, open up a terminal window (command-space, type terminal, enter)

    and execute the following:

    find ~/Pictures/iPhoto\ Library/ -name "*.jpg"

    Thanks!

Talked with her a few hours ago and she's had her third crash/pop-up requiring a new connection to the library that she cannot find. Given that the lappy is 2mths old and she's got the coverage, Apple is going to have to fix this mess up.

    Thanks again for your help!

Apple will NOT do any data recovery normally. that is user responsibility aas per the Apple support agreement

No, but they are liable for the potential of faulty software/hardware.
