Hey guys, I live in Canada and I'm seriously thinking of getting an iPhone. They sell them here for $499 (sometimes unlocked, sometimes not). My question is what about warranty? If anything went wrong with it would I be able to ship it to Apple USA or would I be SOL?

Well, the moment you unlock the iPhone, if I remember correctly, its already voided the warranty.

My suggestion is to wait for Rogers to carry it, should happen soon once they clear up the copyright issues and pricing.

You are in a tight situation unfortunately. It looks as though the iPhone in Canada has been delayed due to a trademark issue, and that could take some time to work out.

As for warranty, if I bought an iPhone and hacked it at all, especially unlocking, I would assume my warranty is void. Apple seems unwilling to deal with these phones, though there have been a few reports of bricked iPhones getting fixed by Apple, but that is like 3 or 4 reports.

So basically, if you buy an iPhone and unlock it, assume you are on your own.

DITTON, you may want to ask Coriolis (moderator) more about it. I know he has an iPhone and he's in Toronto. Ask him how he's using it.

Sweet, ya well thats the thing I'd have to unlock it, but I guess you guys in the states have to unlock it to install app's on it?

I have the v1.0.2 so it's been quite detailed in the unlock as well as 3rd party applications. The v1.1.1 is still under works and Apple has put in a more secure method of locking it, so it may take a while for that.

warranty is not voided if you restore the firmware again and also rogers is delaying for really long time, some apple sites are saying for a year or 2 until rogers gets it. I used the warranty on my iphone couple of weeks ago and also I live in Canada. Just remember to put it back to stock and put at and T sim back in

True, but if Apple does find out the phone has been hacked, especially unlocked, they will not honor the warranty. My point is that you may be able to get it covered, but I would just assume you are out of luck, so be extra careful.

Y'know, this brings up a question I've been meaning to ask the moderators for a long time...do iPod and iPhone-related questions belong in the Apple forum, or the Accessories forum? Because it should technically belong in Accessories, but it is an Apple product and usually the members who frequent the Apple forum are most knowledgeable and helpful in anything Apple ;).

I was wondering the same thing, but I saw that there were posts on iPod's etc. So I decided I'd post where all the guru's hang out lol.

Haha, we need a more definite answer from the administrators/moderators. I find myself wondering if I should report iPod threads for moving forums, as its hard to say where it should be...Apple or Accessories?

But as I said before, it seems those most knowledgeable about Macs and Apple will answer the Apple-related questions best, and they hang around here ;).

No way to simply post a link in one forum pointing to the actual thread in another that gets updated like a normal thread?

Well, NBR doesn't allow cross posting, so that doesn't work...

Mind as well leave it here, no harm in that. Plus, if its only 1-3 threads at a time, then its fine and even 1-3 threads is a bit extreme for such a topic.
