Well, the title speaks for itself.

I'm planning to buy an iPhone today, without knowledge of the next refresh. What's the newer iPhone gonna be like? When is it "supposed" to happen? Should I wait?

I would wait for the next generation of the iPhone.

The question is, how soon do you need it? If you need it now, go for it, if you can wait, I would wait.

It's most likely going to have a bigger capacity, and different look, and possibly slimmer.

3G will be the next big feature in the new iPhone probably. Although I have heard that it may be released anywhere from January at MWSF to late 08. So you may have a short wait or a long one.

The next iPhone probably won't be out until say the second half of 2008...there haven't been any production rumours out, so it almost for sure won't make a Macworld release (maybe an announcement though).

I would just buy one now :p. With the SDK in February, the iPhone will still be a great device even after the second generation arrives. Plus, its only $400 now.

    iPhone later for me.

You don't want to buy one then 6 months later find out you wasted your money because you bought the first generation one.

Later. 3G summer next year. Plus it might get an upgrade to 16gb capacity, which would be a nice sweet spot. If it ever becomes *smaller* and slimmer and more like a phone, less like a silver brick, I would definitely buy one.

Well, that part of it is software, so Apple could release that as a software update later on. If not, probably third parties will with the SDK.

Wrong on both accounts. There are 3rd party IM apps, and the iPhone DOES support word documents out of the box.

I'd wait ... I had an iphone for 3 days (courtesy of a friend). It's nice, but all in all one can wait for the next release. It had some important shortcomings imo, including voice volume. Until then, use a used cell phone, or buy a new one and if you can't afford one, buy something cheap that you can sell on ebay later on.

And I agree... NOKIA is the best.

That reminds me, I was at Future Shop today (a Canadian electronics retailer similar to and owned by Best Buy), and was trying out an iPod Touch again. First thing I noticed, the background of the Home screen was slightly different (yes, I mean the Menu screen with all the icons)...and I just realized that they Jailbroke them! :p

I checked a few more, and sure enough, all were jailbroken iPod Touches on display at Future Shop :p.

    How dare they!

Ok, why do they do that? I have a Motorola (and don't know a damn thing about cell phones). What's wrong with them? Mine works ok and gives me no problems except that like all cells, it's a PITA to carry.

@OP: like with computers, something newer, flashier and nicer will be out soon. If you need a new phone and are set on an iPhone, go for it. If you can wait 'til the next version, you'll probably get more for your money.

    @Sam: Only $400?? Moneybags! [IMG]

Can't tell if its sarcasm :p, but if not, Motorola's OS is really bad...looks bad, hard to use...its hardware designs aren't terrible, but it really needs to catch up on its OS. Nokia and Sony Ericsson do the best UI (not counting Apple in this).

As for the $400 thing, I wish :D! I'm famous for always being broke...but its "only" $400 considering an iPod Touch is already $300.

As far as I remember, Apple actually supports jailbreaking their products, they just void your warranty if you do. It's just like upgrading any piece of equipment; it doesn't mean it's illegal, it just will most of the time void your warranty.

Yeah, and this quote adds on to what I said above, there's nothing wrong with jailbreaking your iPhone/iPod Touch, it just comes with a risk.

I have had Nokias ever since I had cell phones, 12 years now? Nokia really dropped the ball on Symbian a few years back. My 6600 was good for the time, but a few years later I got a N73 and apart from better hardware the software was... 1:1 the same! I could hardly believe it. Looking extremely dated. Slow as hell.

I was very annoyed, sold it, and got an iPhone later on. It doesn't have a 5MP camera, paid-for GPS or 3G like the N95 but the software is indeed 5 years ahead of the Nokia.
Nokia makes nice hardware but there was no excuse for the crap software they put on their smart phones before the iPhone and there certainly isn't one now. I am hoping this is the kick in the behind that Nokia needed to make their software usable again... competition is good :)

This amazed me, and yes, its real. Its Nokia's iPhone killer...and seriously, looks and works really like an iPhone. Nokia should just admit it is an iPhone clone :p.

No sarcasm from me, Sam. As I said, I don't know a damn thing about cell phones; I rarely use mine. Not sure what makes the OS bad, or why Mac Man expressed such an enlightening opinion: "They have a reason they suck!!!!"

There may be much better phones available - beats me - but since mine works when I need it, it's good enough for me. I, frankly, don't know a good cell from a bad one; they just really don't interest me much. The truth is, though, I need the damn thing occasionally, unfortunately.

Maybe I should run down to the Apple store for an iPhone since they're only $400. [IMG]

I am interested in getting an iPhone, but I really want it to have 16GB of space and would like for it to be able to record video, instead of only being able to take pictures, so I am just waiting... Do any of you think the iPhone will be able to take actual video in the future?

I wouldn't get one now. It's bluetooth is crippled, which is an important feature for me, since me and my friends usually share videos or pictures through bluetooth, and when I need to use internet I use DUN profile to use my phone as a modem. I think that has more to do with AT&T than apple though, since US carriers generally cripple a cellphone and barely lets people call someone. It's a shame really, thank god carriers in my country aren't like that.

My other pet peeve was lack of native 3rd party support, but I guess now you can easily jailbreak your iphone and soon there will be native apps with the new sdk coming.

And last but not least, is the keyboard. I've become quite proficient at typing text messages using T9 dictionary, I barely ever look at my cell when I typing down a message, and I usually do it with one hand if I am doing another thing at the same time. I don't think I would be able to do that with the iphone, not to mention I would have to relearn typing texts again, which sounds kinda annoying... but still, it's the software that makes a cellphone great and I think the iphone is ahead of it's time. Wait until the 2nd gen one, you will get 3g, more storage, a few new features, etc. I think you will only have to wait until june for that one. I will do the same.

For now my normal cellphone works just fine at making calls, sending texts, and as a modem.

Naw, I don't see any reason the iPhone will go up in price. Apple's already pretty strained into meeting the 10 million sold in 2008 goal, so I don't see any reason why they would even try at anything that might hinder sales now.

They probably will, given that they're doing worldwide releases and iPhone 2 will be released sometime in the year. But I don't think they'll do anything to risk not meeting that target, as their stock price is really relying on the iPhone right now.

I don't understand if they want to meet that quota faster then they should have also sold it in Canada. It is almost time for the Iphone 2 and we still have no sight of a Iphone in Canada. Also I will say it many times and say it again they should put a better GPU's in the MBP!

That is mainly Rogers' fault. Rogers probably isn't agreeing to revenue sharing, and as well, carriers charge tons here in Canada. Unlimited data plans (something that the iPhone would benefit from) would cost hundreds per month here.

Apple is doing the best they can to keep iPhone sales low with it's tie-in-lock-out strategy. God knows how many units they'd have sold if only they were available in most parts of the world.

I am in Thailand, iPhone costs about $750 here as grey import + unlocked. And they're selling despite that steep price and despite people knowing that these are hacked devices. All Apple's loss...

Personally, I think this strategy was a huge mistake, revenue sharing or not. They will make some money off the contracts, for sure, but I think the number of users they make the phone unattractive for by far outweighs that. People in Europe and Asia are used to pay on the go cards, no contracts, no lock-in.Or alternatively a free phone.
Sluggish sales in the U.K and Germany are not at all surprising. The iPhone would become an instant hit and blockbuster in Europe if it sold like other phones. People want the iPhone but they can't have it on their terms, so they stay away. Just shows Apple's inexperience in the international cell phone market.

I am really hoping Apple rethinks their strategy for the next version.

Part of the Apple 'Image' is exclusivity and being 'different'. They kind of went into uncharted waters with the Ipod, since those of us that hate it are the 'different' ones. I'm not saying this is why, but it may be a factor on the price and locking people in to the contracts to keep demand lower. ALSO, if they get bumrushed for the phone and they can't come anywhere close to meeting demand, people get pissed.

Estimates peg the amount of revenue sharing at around $18 per month per unit. Do the math. Over a 2 year contract that is $432! More than the price of the phone, and pure profit! They would have to sell at least two and a half times more iPhones to meet the same profit!

As for iPhone not doing well in Europe, it seems people may have been a little too quick to call that one:
    http://www.appleinsider.com/article...ne_outpacing_rivals_in_europe_without_3g.html
The gist of it is that iPhone is outselling most of its competitors including the HTC Touch, LG Prada, and even the vaunted Nokia N-95.

i would certainley get it now and jailbreak it (change it so you can add 3rd party apps) and perhaps unlock it - but if you don't like cingular cuz they rip you off then unlock it too

i jailbreaked it 2 days ago when i bought the phone:

i now can send apps to as many people as i like at once - (can't do normally
send picture messages (can't do normally)
    i get full internet access for 5.99 a month (t-mobiles t-zones)
you can save any song in your ipod section as a ringtone (can't do normally)
have the radio on it (can't do normally)
change the order of applications and change the logo for any part of the phone (can't do normally)
add any app i want for free, or game for free (have NES with 200 games on it now) - with hundreds to choose from and fixing ANY feature the iphone is missing, software wise, and then add soo much more

**they just released a 3rd party app allowing to record video (can't do it normally)**

t-mobile is $71 for full unlimited internet, 1500 minutes and unlimited text messages

cingular is $100 for the same but WITH ONLY 900 minutes

$30 more and 600 less minutes? you got to be kidding me

if you don't want to jailbreak it, then don't get it now, but if you don't care (takes 4 min to do), then by far it is worth it

id wait at least until something besides 1.1.2 is available for it software wise.

v1.0 of the firmware was WONDERFUL, i had no troubles. through the progression of the firmware updates, it has gotten worse and worse. I can no longer really use safari, its guarenteed to crash. Last night, i had my contacts somehow get in the wrong letters. IE: the last "B" would be in C, the last D in "E", that sort of thing.

1.1.2 is a nightmare, id avoid it even if it means skipping the iphone for now.

I love the phone, but the software, good lord al mighty, come on apple.
