    Hi all,

I just purchased an iPhone 3G from Europe and I was wondering if is possible to use it as a modem for my PC. I would like to use the HSDPA for my laptop. I heard there is an application called NetShare but I can't find it in the Appstore...Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance

If you're willing to jailbreak, it is possible. As for NetShare, it was up, then down, and I'm not sure if it's back or what. I grabbed a copy while it was up.

Google is your friend and will help you immensely.

NetShare was the only way to do this without jailbreaking your phone, but it's been taken down, and it looks like it will not be coming back to the App Store. You can jailbreak your phone and use one of the related clients - I'm not sure which ones are currently the perceived leaders in the field, but I'm sure you can find reviews online. Jailbreaking is quite easy these days, just use the Pwnage Tool from the iPhone Dev Team.

Netshare would be the best option if it ever returns to the App Store. Other then that, idk.

What are the disadvantages if I jailbreak it? Will I still be able to update the iPhone with the new firmwares form iTunes?
Why I didn't hear before about NetShare?? :(

Everytime you update your iPhone with new firmware, it will wipe the phone and you will need to jailbreak it again (assuming that the firmware you install CAN be jailbroken).

v2.0.2 can not be jailbroken YET.

The main disadvantage to jail breaking it is you lose the warranty and you usually have to stay away from firmware updates, not that they have anything really important anyways.

There were rumors of AT&T releasing a tethering plan for the iPhone but the rumors had it costing $29.99 or something outrageous. Unless it's $5.99/month or free I'll continue surfing on the iPhone itself.

^you wont loose your warranty-you can restore it to un_jail broken condition any time.

Unless it breaks while you have it jail broken and they notice it when you send it in.

    Um, no.

You can ALWAYS reset an iPhone to it's factory state. There will never be a time where you are unable to restore it, so what you're suggesting isn't possible.

Oh. I guess someone could walk me through the steps on how to restore an iPhone with a complete battery failure. Won't accept a charge, battery is completely kaput, and won't turn on.

At which point it would be rather difficult for Apple to know it was jailbroken.

Well I guess you can take the chance they won't figure out why it won't turn on and just give you a new one.

I screwed up my iphone 2G due back in the days to a bad JB and wasn't able to get it power-up again. I took it to an Apple Store and didn't mention the JB'ing part. After a few mins, they were able to power it up in Recovery Mode and restored my Apple to the latest firmware.
