I have been toying with the idea of purchasing a refurbished 8gig 1st gen iPod touch now that the 2nd gen is out there. Last time I checked the apple site the refurbs were ~ $180 US. The other day, however, a friend of mine offered to sell me his 8gig unlocked, jail-broken iPhone (non-3G version). He's willing to part with it for $200 (though I may be able to talk him down a bit).

I don't really need the iPhone (I currently have a cell phone on a PAYG plan that I rarely use), but the technopile in me is pulling for that just to play around with it.

Which should I go for and why?

I would say go the iphone. One simple reason is the physical volume control button. Second, I believe that headphones with the call/pause/advance button work on the iphone but not on 1st gen touches (could be wrong). These are great as trying to skip a song while the ipod is in your pocket is a pain. Plus it will also mean that you don't have to carry another device/phone, so there is less pocket saggage.
Final reason is that that is a great price for a 1st gen iphone... people were selling them for twice that price only a month ago.

I like my iPhone because I only have to carry one thing.

iPhone FTW. It makes more sense to buy the device with more features, especially if the prices are comparable.

you know im going to go against what everyone else is saying... you said earlier that you rarely use your cellphone, so whats the point of paying more for something your not going to use..

ask yourself what is it going to be used for ? if its only for music than get the Touch, if your going to use the Iphone than it may be better...

i dont know about the contracts with the iphone but isnt there more of a contract versus the Payg you have right now...

just ask yourself if you are going to get full use out of it, and if the answer is no, than save your money and buy the touch

the price difference is just 20 bucks......and morever his friend can reduce it a little.

and old iphones can be unlocked....so there is no need of any contracts n stuff. he can use payg as before

it will simply negate the need of carrying 2 devices :)

The simple fact is that the first gen iphone is/was a better ipod then the ipod touch was. So either way if the main use is music then the iphone is still the better choice.

I tried that, but she beat me to the punch and got a new iPod touch from a friend who took advantage of the back to school promo. Its her's but I get to figure out how to move her contacts and calendar to it. Grrrr :(
