Any of you guys know when the next Apple event might be held? I was looking at the product cycle of the iMac and it looks like it might be updated soon..

Latest info was back in June, which confirmed through sources that Apple was planning to implement a price drop sometime in "Fall" along the lines of what happened in the mobile lines, which might coincide with "two new features" being launched in the iMac line and/or a new desktop chassis similar to the 24 Cinema Display. Speculation was feature #1 would be BRay, but no guessing on #2.

There's been no chatter about the desktop line at all during the last 2 months - probably in part because of Snow's release and then the iPod event last week. Best guesses put a desktop update perhaps sometime in October, so that both the iPod and desktop lines are updated and ready for the holiday shopping season.

But then wouldn't a BD Drive hike up the price of manufacturing it, therefore not allowing Apple to drop the unit price?

    Not necessarily.

BRay play drives (not burners, I doubt this is on the table) in the volume quantities that Apple would be purchasing have quite a low per unit cost, and the current cost of other components is lower than 6-12 months ago. Plus, there is evidence that Apple is already using their significant profit margins from iPhone/Touch to subsidize the June 09 price drops in the mobile line (and could conceivably apply this to the desktop units too).

With $20B+ in cash reserves, and still selling tens of millions of mp3 and other units per quarter, this is easily within reach for Cupertino.
