Why do you ask about all those computers?

    But yes.

    hi persnickety,

i'm asking because my macbook and macbook pro is able to be turned off completely, while my thinkpad x300 isnt able to do so.

my desktop monitor to the best of my knowledge is also unable to turned off the backlight.

the old Apple Cinema Display (the one before the current one) is also unable to be turned off - if i remmember correctly.

im interested in the iMac, and wheter it have ability to turn the brightness down all the way to off.

one of my monitor (samsung 244t) on its lowest settings, is still a bit bright for long session reading/writing.

Although this won't answer anything, nor will make the funtion appear on your 244t, a good thing to do when writing or reading on a screen - especially for a long session - is to get a good* light next to it. It will also make your screen seem less bright. :)

*No halogens or single or triple led's and that sort of cold, hars, and directional light.

For the iMac (by default) you can't turn the brightness all the way down but you can turn the display off. In System Preferences choose Expose&Spaces and on the Expose tab for hot corners select "Sleep Display" from one of the drop down tabs.
