Hello, first of all, sorry if ever I posted in a wrong forum. But, I would like to ask a question from the experts here. Here's the problem.. I had my iMac (21.5in 2009) repaired to an official distributor of Apple here in PH. It is found out that there's a problem in HDD so they need to replace it. They are asking me 15,000 PHP ( that's approximately around 365USD) for the new 500gb 3.5'' HDD. Now the question is, it's really worth it to pay that much for a 500GB HDD?

PH I assume its the phillipines, depends on what is the cost on other apple centers, if there is only one, yeah its going to be costly, and another question is that all, or just the parts?

Yes, it's Philippines. 15k PHP (365USD) for 500g HDD only + 2000 PHP labor fee (50USD) + stocking fee (They said the HDD will be ordered from Apple SG and it would cost 25% of 15k PHP) = all in all it prolly it would cost like 22k PHP (around 533USD). Should I just scrap my iMac and just buy a new one? I really find the 500GB HDD @ 365USD OP.

Just replace the HDD yourself, don't they make Hard drives over there? or pretty close?

That's not an easy task on an iMac. I've replaced plenty of hard drives, even on older MacBook Pros where doing so would have voided the warranty and even then it's not something I would personally do.

Can you purchase the hard drive separately and then bring it in for the repair center to install? Any standard 3.5" Serial ATA desktop hard drive should work.

meh I'd just watch a youtube tutorial video and then do it. I did it on my Macbook Pro earlier it wasn't that bad.... Granted I had to by some star tipped screw drivers but it worked out.

My mom agreed with the fees but I really think it isn't worth it since their charge for a new HDD is so OP. I guess I have to do it myself then? Do you think this one would work WESTERN DIGITAL 1TB SATA GREEN 64MB - Internal Hard Drives - Storage - Components ?

Might be worth getting a SSD if you dont need the space... Will feel much faster for loading things and bootup.
