    im considering getting ilife 08.

does iLife 08 install nicely over iLife 06?

is there a key involved or does the box just have the DVD? (just curious)

If you're referring to the $10/free upgrade disk, there's no problem.

No key involved. It comes in a padded yellow envelope - but the MA number is on the back of the envelope, so be sure to save it if you want to register the software (not needed to use it).

The package comes with the iLife 08 upgrade disk, an iWorks 08 trial disk, 4 proofs of purchases, and an instruction sheet.

Incidentally, I had already uninstalled (well more like deleted) iLife 06 and all the loops and themes weeks ago, so I did a clean install of the iLife 08 "upgrade" disk and it installed fine (even though it even says "upgrade" during the process too).

I did end up having to add more loops later on (i opted to download the 1GB instead of digging up my DVD (yea i'm lazy like that)) for one of my projects, but that went off without a hitch too.

Yeah, there is no key/serial required for iLife 08, but there is for iWork 08. So for iLife 08 you just insert the DVD and run the installer. I installed directly over 06 and it's perfectly OK. It will even create a new folder for iMovie HD 06 in case you still want to use that (you can download iMovie HD 06 for free from Apple anyways). Maybe repair the disk permissions afterwards to be safe.

So, if I decided to completely start fresh with OSX and iLife, I could just use my iLife '08 update disk and it will install the full version? Or do I need to first install iLife '06 first?

No need to have iLife 06 as far as I can tell. I had already had iLife 06 installed, but I tried uninstalling as much of it as I could find before (AppDelete, and then manually deleting the loops and themes in the various libraries).

iLife 08 installed just fine even though it said "upgrade".

Your iLife 08 DVD is actually the full version. It performs an upgrade only if you already have a previous version of iLife installed. So if you reinstall OSX, just use the iLife 08 DVD. There is no need to install 06 first.

Thats good to know. Just one more point of clarification: my iLife '08 disc is the "up-to-date" variety. Is that the same thing as an "upgrade" disc?

Sometimes two similar terminologies can mean completely different things...

Edit: Nevermind, I just took a look at the iLife DVD I had and it specifically says "upgrade dvd" on it. So that would mean I can install it in full if needed, according to your post. Thanks!
