Try deleting, and then reinstalling iChat only, not Tiger...

Switch to Adium?
-
are you using Tiger or Leopard? also, have you set up any type of network sharing? as that seems to be the issue with certain users.
-
I did go to accounts and made one for my friend because she wanted to sign in while at my house so i just deleted her but it doesn't seem to fix the problem. I am using Lepoard. The only network sharing I could think of is when I signed in my friend...But then once I did and she was done using it I disabled her account....Before that it signed in as her automattically on my ma so could that be it?? I don't know if I'm making sense. lol
Also if I wanted to plug my mac into a projector theres a port on my computer for that right? I want to bring it to school for a powerpoint presentation...but I want to make sure it will work. The lab has a largish chunky on both sides plug that works with her older model mbp. -
hmm, yeah you are making sense, but I am not really sure what else it could be.
speaking of iChat!!!! holy crap! it supports Google Talk now!!!!! hell yeah!!! best thing ever, I may finally be able to stop using MSN messenger for good
don't give up on a fix, if it were me, I think my next step would be to reinstall the program, drag it to the trash, and possibly search for everything iChat related and remove it. to reinstall it, you can put in your OS install disk, and choose optional installs, and then just install iChat.
also, to hook up to a projector, you sill just need to determine what type of inputs it has, most likely VGA (trapezoid shaped connector, usually blue), your MBP came with a VGA adapter to easily connect to this older style connection. -
deleted ichat, inserting OS leopard disk now. Thank you circa

thank you for making me aware of iChats Google Talk cabapilities ^_^

Your welcome.
Sadly, reinstalling hasn't worked. We know that it is a leopard glitch because it worked when I had tiger. Could wiping everything and then clean install laopard help? -

It might, it might not.
You could try, but in the end, if it doesn't work, you're going to have to watch for an update. =\
Just out of curiosity, why are you using iChat? -
i am using iChat under Leopard without any problems, if you can, you might go by an Apple store to see if they have any ideas that don't invovle a reformat.
i am using iChat because it works with Google Talk. -
I am using ichat becaus it came on my mac and I don't know if I like adium...
-
If re-installing doesn't work it may be the user preferences for ichat, or a firewall issue on a router (if wireless is being used). For the user preferences, create a new user and put in your iChat preferences then test to see if a video chat will work. For the firewall possibility try using the apple knowledge base article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93208 to see if it helps. You can also check to see if your router against the compatible list at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93333. Hope it helps.

you really should do a clean install of leopard before giving up on the problem, after trying other solutions.
for what its worth- you DID do an upgrade-install, right?
back up your files first, then make it happen. -
I guess I am going to have to.
So I just back everything onto my portable hardrive and then.....? I know I am supposed to delete everything but i just don't know how! -
Check out the Leopard Installation & Setup Guide (PDF).
The information you want begins on Page 4. Here is an overview:
Insert the Leopard DVD. Double-click the "Install Mac OS X" icon from within the disc. Your computer should Restart from the DVD. Then select your language and click the arrow.
[Optional Steps: Then from the Menu Bar choose Utilities > Disk Utility. In Disk Utility select your hard drive in the left pane and click the Partition tab. Choose 1 Volume and Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Click the Options button and choose GUID. Click Apply, then Partition. After the process completes Quit Disk Utility to return to the Leopard Installation.]
If you've already erased your hard drive the only option should be "Install Mac OS X" otherwise choose "Erase and Install" and click OK. To access additional options click the Customize button. You can deselect items to save disk space. For more information check the Installation & Setup Guide and visit <noparse>Apple</noparse>'s Leopard Installation Support Site. Or just ask more questions here!Last edited by a moderator: May 8, 2015 -
also, make sure to double check you have backed up everything you want, as it is easy to forget some things.
don't forget things like bookmarks, etc.
