The last three topics I've posted have dealt with the same issues you are asking....and sadly I've only had two replies, from all three combined. It just doesn't seem like people reply here. For my preferences, the speed with the ibook is just fine. I also like the better battery life on the ibook, and to me screen size is an issue. Even if the resolutions are the same, maybe it's a subconscious thing, but I really prefer a 14" and the 15" powerbook. In terms of the new os, Tiger, some people point to an amazon.com accidental release date slip-up that said March 31st if I recall correctly. As for the G5 notebooks, don't expect those for a year, giver take a few months. According to other posts on this website, the G5 is too large, and too hot to put in a notebook. Apparently there are some different tweaks that can be made so the g4 can opperate at lower clock speeds but do things faster, idk they say it has to do with multiple cores, just read up a little around here. I wish more people would reply here, cause like yourself I am new to mac guy, and I would love to find out more. O yeah, and combo drive vs, super....If you plan on putting any home movies or moving large quantities of data go for it, if not, then It's just up to you whether you think you may ever need it. Look to my need a superdrive topic, and note the lack of response for that same question. Let's pick it up guys and get this forum rollin' again

as Ben says, don't hold your breath on the G5. There's some hurdles Apple has to jump to get the G5 processor into a notebook and the timeline is therefore indeterminate.

Keep in mind that when comparing iBook to PowerBook you consider the build and style. The PowerBook has different dimensions, it is slimmer at 1.1" thick while the iBook is 1.35" thick. The PowerBook uses a stain resistant aluminum casing while the iBook is plastic. So, in other words, the PowerBook is better built with higher quality and lighter components.

I'm certainly not a Mac guru and can only help so much, if you have very specific questions it might be worth cross posting in a forum such as www.macaddict.com

For my use, the ibook would be fine. Web browsing, office apps, email = 99% of my work. CAD = the other 1%. That said, I wanted a powerbook if I went mac, strictly for style and percieved build quality. I had decided to go windows based on CAD availability. I then found a smokin' good deal on a 12" pb, and bought it. If I need to start doing cad again, I'll either get Vectorworks, or get a windows machine for AutoCad. I take my laptop EVERYWHERE, and wanted a small, less than 5 lb. machine and was willing to sacrifice csreen real estate. So far, so good.
