a while ago i mentioned the trouble i had setting up vmware fusion, parallels desktop 3, and crossover.

i couldn't get any of them to work properly.

but apparently, with vmware at least, there was just a glitch.

    it works AMAZINGLY.

granted- i had already set up ntfs read/write ability on my mac using ntfs 3g and macfuse.

still, parallels worked perfectly on my 40 gig ntfs boot camp partition. and im loving it. i had sort of romanticized that i would only use windows for gaming. as it turns out, from time to time there is that one little 5 second thing i have to do in windows.

that requires a complete reboot: losing all the windows i had open, waiting a minute, doing 5 seconds of work, reboot AGAIN, and then return to a productive state in osx. so much waste.

now, i can simply run windows inside of osx, and have full access to my boot camped windows installation. it is obviously a little slower than an actual boot. you have to dedicate a certain amount of ram to it. its running inside of osx. not optimal for power hungry apps like games or unraring that 30 gig complete works of the beatles file, but its really good for the normal stuff.

    really good.

i am surprised. in fact, some things it does better. trackpad problems are gone for one (i assume that is related to the fact that you are REALLY running osx)

i haven't tried games yet. i might test out steam and cs:s in a bit. in fact, i might even be willing to install steam inside of vmware fusion just to check out its stability.

i will probably be using this for class in the fall, instead of "real" windows. that one windows program i will run inside vmware, everything else will be osx. (assuming im not on the battery - hopeful)

the one bad thing about this is that even though i am only doing simple tasks in both operating systems at the same time, my processor is up at 60 degrees (fans at 6k rpms)

i have a script running in windows that is basically doing simple browser functions. simulating clicking links and loading pages. there is a flash program running also, and firefox, also antivirus and antispyware are running. those last two might be causing the processor to work.

in osx i just have adium, firefox, and vmware running.
