I believe it follows the Mac not the person.

Even though AppleCare is technically tied to the equipment, there is a process to follow for AppleCare transfers. I posted about it in detail a long time ago but I can't seem to find my own post on it.

It's described in detail in the AppleCare User Agreement document that you should have, but if you don't have it you can view it online on Apple's site. There's a specific section for Transfers in there.

You can do it either via fax or email (email address and fax number are in the agreement document). They'll need a proof of purchase of the AppleCare (not the equipment), your details and the new owner's details (Name, address, phone number and email).

The process takes about 2-3 days. You'll get an email confirmation of when the transfer is completed and the new owner will get a new agreement via mail with his/her details on it etc...

I know because I've done this a few times now and it's straight forward.

It is a bit different with the 1 year Applecare and the 2 year extension. With the 1 year the new owner just have to call in and provide the previous owner's name. When you are past than and into the 2 year extension you have to submit some paperwork. The easiest way is to actually use the previous owner's name.

In all fairness to you and Seshan, if one doesn't go through the official transfer process I doubt Apple would decline service since, as you both correctly stated, AppleCare is tied to the hardware.

It's just that Apple will most likely make you go through the process at the time of service request, if it wasn't already done, so you might as well do it upfront at the time of the sale. That makes the sale go a lot smoother in my experience and then you're cleared from any further involvement further down the line should the need for that arise.
