i was wondering if there was a way to keep yourself signed onto the internet when your computer is idle? when i close the lid to my mbp, it signs off completely and when i leave it alone, it signs me out of ichat when i resume. is there a way to keep myself logged into ichat at all times? thanks

MBP is designed in such a way that it sucks air from above the keyboard for cooling, so when you shut the lid, it sleeps to avoid overheating. So i guess that keeping the internet on when the lid is down is not possible.

    insomniaX !

It works great...just enable...close the lid, the screen shuts off, and whatever your running works fine. Now, i wouldnt do this with your cpu running at 90% power or anything, heat could be an issue. But really, if your just running firefox or have something downloading in the background, you will be just fine from what ive read here and on macrumours forums. I dont notice any heat jump after closing my lid for an hour or so...

InsomniaX for closing the lid. Be warned though, that sometimes after you use it and finish using it your computer won't go back to sleep. Meaning if you close the lid and walk off and the battery runs out, the computer will die. No deep sleep or anything. Just flat out off.

Use Caffine if you plan on keeping your Macbook awake with the lid open.

i am using insomniax thank you guys. i dont think i am too worried about my mbp overheating because people say that the mbp will turn off if it gets too hot and it is also capable running in clamshell mode. maybe apple will make the internet connection always on even when you close the lid in leopard?
