Around about 10 seconds is normal for me. Depends on how much stuff I was doing when I shut the lid.

7 seconds is normal. The reason why it takes this long is because newer macs come in sleep mode 3 which is "safe sleep". This is a cross between sleep and hibernating. When you close the lid of your mac, your session is saved to ram and your hard drive. By writing your session to the hard drive, your mac can resume where you left off in case your battery gets depleted during use or you want to switch out to a new battery while the mac is in sleep mode.

If you want your mac to go to sleep faster (approx 2 seconds for me), try this:

Open terminal and type in: pmset -g | grep hibernatemode This will show you what sleep mode you are in (it should be hibernate mode 3). Then in terminal, enter this command to change the sleep mode: sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 0 Hit enter and type in the administrator password.
Sleep mode 0 only writes to ram which is why it goes to sleep faster.

i want it to sleep faster, maybe i should do those steps, what is the admin pw (my pw?). what is the benefit? i mostly keep my mac sleep whenever i dont use it (overnight, sometimes days). thanks

Edit: so the only reasons for safe sleep is for power outtage? if i dont worry all the power outage i can go the steps you posted.

If you didn't setup any other user accounts, than it should be your own password...the Admin. The benefits of sleep mode 0 is it sleeps faster and wakes up faster. The downside is the power outtage issue. I use sleep mode 0 because I close the lid of my computer and throw the computer in my bag immediately. If it were in sleep mode 3 and writing to the HD while I did this I could be potentially damaging the HD.

I forgot to mention two things. You must be logged in as the Admin to do this. And if you are going from sleep mode 3 to 0, you should run a few more command lines to free up some space that was written to your hard drive when going to sleep from you last session. Do this in terminal by typing in: cd /var/vm then hit enter. Type sudo rm sleepimage then hit enter and enter your password.

7 seconds is pretty normal, mine is around then. Aren't 7 seconds already fast enough? ;)

for my MBP to go to sleep, it usually requires 15 seconds to fall asleep. largely this is because i have a ton of applications open, including fusion. so it takes a bit of time for it to do its thing to copy the info for the hibernation to the hard-disk and prep the system for waking up later on.

Having 4GB of RAM also slows it down.

Yeah, about 7-10 seconds for myself.

Wake up is almost instant though. The hibernate mode seems... to work sometimes. I've yanked my battery (didn't have any programs open at the time) to see if it would recover and it did. But once, it was asleep and I forgot ot plug it in so the battery died, and unfortunately it did not recover from hibernation.
