i recently installed vista 64 on my mbp and even though i used vlite to strip out the languages, media center, and a couple of other things resulting in a 2gb install disk, after installation, vista still took up a whopping 15gb. since hdd space is precious on a laptop, i'm wondering how you guys are dealing with such a huge footprint.

i've tried turning off system restore, deactivating hibernate, and using ccleaner, i still was not able to get it down under 10gb.

just wondering what's the smallest footprint everyone's been able to get with vista and how did you do it. i plan to use vista primarily for playing games only. ok, thanks.

15GB is a very normal number for a fresh Vista installation.

Vista isnt the best operating system for playing games in my opinion.
I stripped my vista x64 down to 1.5GB using vlite, Resulting in an install of around 4-5 gig.
I cannot remeber everything i did but I stipped all Languages, Drivers, Most of the media things like Media centre, Movie maker, Default demo pics, vids, music, Took off things like Natural language, tablet PC, Windows Defender, System restore, defragmenter, Help files, and many of the big things that i did not require. Took a lot of services off that i didnt need too.
Then once installed i disabled pagefile, Hibernation and many services that were left over.
Ended up with 33 processess running at fresh install and a very quick computer. Not had a single problem so far due to the things i removed.

Mickbt26, thanks for your detailed response. i used disk inventory to check out my vista partition and it was showing me that i 16gb worth of pagefile.sys. i did some cursory reading online and most people suggests not turning off the pagefiling, but you haven't had any problems with it? hmm, i may try taking another stab at vlite or at least turning off the pagefile. 4-5 gb sounds like where i would like to be. thanks.

I turned off the pagefile simply because i have 4GB of it and never ever use it all in any programs i have used. Even games can only bring my total memory usage to about 3 - 3.5GB

You might run into a problem if you do this on a 32 bit OS due to the memory limitations. 4GB will be 3 - 3.5GB on a 32 bit OS depending on your hardware and may not be enough to do without a pagefile
