Hi, got a friend with a mac book laptop who uses a USB wireless AT&T device for internet access.

He needs to get the internet out the ethernet port to feed another device requiring internet access!

Not being an "Apple" person what is the procedure to do this, in "Apple for Dummies" language?

    thanks chris

I have not done this with macs but this should work. If not other will correct me.

    Under System Preferences / Sharing
    select internet sharing

Have the eithernet port active connected to a router it should as for which port.

If your not using a router use a crossover cable and setup the pc manually ip, with gateway being the wireless ip. You have to do this any way.

Everything was fine until I used the button in the upper right corner to disconnect from the internet and closed the lid of the mac book.

When I re-opened/turned on the mac book and used the button to CONNECT to the internet, the mac book connected fine but not my BRIDGED device, another laptop non-mac!

Now the device that was " bridged" out of the mac doesn't have access to the internet. I type "ipconfig" in a dos box, I get an ip address of 192.168.2.3 but if i try to ping " yahoo" one ping is sent/returned but the next 3 attempts say time out. it is as if the mac book has " firewalled" my connection.

When I open Firefox i can't get any connections to web sites.

How did closing the lid terminate internet connection?

I re-enabled " internet sharing" by way of system properties and selected the " ethernet port", and the mac still gives me the ip address, above but no access to the internet!!

    how did this happen?

and how do I get my device(s) internet access again?

closing the lid puts the computer to sleep. the memory state is suspended and everything else shuts down.

I take it that includes internet sharing?

The AT&T wireless USB device stayed lit( powered up) though, which I assumed (incorrectly?) meant the internet would still pass through. Wouldn't the power to the USB port have terminated?

Regardless, but why upon restart/reboot did the settings change?

I even started from scratch as if I had not initiated internet sharing made the same changes as the first time and nada!

Let me ask you this, when making the choices under internet sharing, I need to select a "TO" and a FROM correct?

Ok, beings I'm using the ethernet port out of the MAC and the ethernet port in on my laptop, is that what the two settings should be under internet sharing on the MAC ? Reason I say this is I'm not sure ( I don't have access to the MAC right now) if I chose ethernet in the FROM box. I think I chose airport!

But if I chose incorrectly, how did it work the first time?

    hmmmm

    1. Setup ICS in System Prefs to share out the Ethernet port.
    2. Connect your Ethernet cable
    3. Open a CMD window on the Windows PC and type:
    • ipconfig /release
    • ipconfig /renew

That will make Windows release and renew all connection settings on all network connections.

If after that you still don't have internet, check your DNS settings when everything is hooked up. Input a primary and secondary DNS server into the Windows machine under TCP/IP settings under the adapter configuration. You can try the free OpenDNS addresses... 208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220

Also, yes... closing the Mac's lid will put the computer to sleep. Without the OS actively running, network connections are terminated.

The reason the at&t unit stayed on is that the USB ports on the MBP (and MBA) are powered even if the notebooks is in sleep mode. That way you can still charge an iPod, iPhone, iPad, or any other USB device without having the computer on. So the power to the USB ports will not stop even if a MBP/MBA is in sleep mode. As pointed out, the OS is doing all the work of sharing the internet connection and without that, it would be impossible to continue.
