hi, i have just received my 17" macbook pro. i haven't turn it on yet. right now, i'm charging the battery and plan to turn it on when it is fully charged.

now. the problem. before even the magsafe power adapter is plugged in. it produce a faint crackling noise. when it is plugged in into the notebook. it porduces a buzzing/hissing noise. bear in mind that the computer has never been turned on.

    is this normal?

I'd shove that $2000 laptop and power cord down Steve Jobs turtle neck wearing throat if I were you.

Then again those magnetic adapters were flawed since day one.

I'd call Apple and get them to fix the issues, because not one of the 4 macbook pros in the office make anything that you've described.
    Good luck..

Mine makes a very slight buzzing noise when charging. I can only hear it when my MBP is off and the room is completely silent, and even then its hardly noticable.

How loud is the noise yours is making?

i can hear it on top of the fan that my macbook pro makes. it is fairly loud. the sound and loudness also seems to be connected to the notebook, it depends on the load and on the state of being plug/unplugged.

i called apple tech support just then, and they insist that i should take it to the apple center to have it looked at. also, they said that buzzing is normal but not crackling. the problem is, the nearest apple center is inconviniently far and hard place to access.

right now, under certain circumstances, the things even beep! (eg. when i take it off the powerplug) o_O,. my room can be classified as somewhat silent. and this hissing noise certainly is annoying.

edit: should i also metion that it is the powerbrick that is emitting the noise.

Take it in and have it looked at. Also, it can be because of the power source at your house. If your power is not clean it can cause buzzing and such. But first take the MagSafe in and get it replaced.

    thanks so far guys.

but i really don't think its a power source at my house. also, i use a really good surge protector, which shows that my line are clean and the power is properly grounded.

oh, and i actually check my macbook (13") power adapter and it does emits very very faint buzz, but not crackling no hissing, etc. when the computer is turned off or sleep. but not when it is on. but it is nearly silent (can only be heard when your ear is next to its adapter and you listen carefully) compared to my macbook pro's, which is clearly heard at 30 to 40 centimeters and still faintly audible at 1 meters.

and is it normal to have scratches on your macbook pro? the first macbook pro i received has a small scuff on the lid edge.. this second one however has one spot where there is a small but several deep scratches on the bottom of the notebook.

but no dead pixel on both of them luckily :) the first one got horrible backlight evenness and has plenty of light leakage. this one got light leakage around the bottom, but i think i'm pretty satified with this one, screen wise.

oh apparently the keyboard on this one is not really satisfactory, there is 3 (X, U and Y) keys that feels loose, clicky, noisy.

update: OMG! i found another problem! the right screen latch is not latching properly causing the right side of the screen to be lifted slightly. also when the screen is opened, the right lid latch is not retracted fully or jammed, sometimes badly so, in some occasion.

i must say.... this is bizzare! lol!

do you think apple could replace my notebook for the second time? any tip? anyone? cashmoone you're a veteran in this don't you ;)?

Take it into a store or call applecare. It is possible, albeit unlikely, that they will replace it. Everything except the scratches are within "normal specifications" in so far as they happen to more than just a very small minority (bowing on the LCD, wiggly keys) and don't really affect performance in any way. Although if the things you are describing are worse than normal you may be able to get a replacement.

this might be strange; but i've got scratches/scrape on the 2 MBP i received. and when i open my macbook pro there is someone's hair, it seems apple factory did not use hair wrap!?
