You're in the right place for Apple hardware here. Might as well ask, as most of us know about desktops as well.

    Plus, we have www.desktopreview.com

I personally like the 20" more because I find 24" is too much for regular work. When I want more space or want to watch a movie, I just external it to my plasma tv.

The 24" iMac has a much more superior display than the 20" iMac. If you can afford the extra cost, you should definitely opt for the 24" since it's technically much better value for money.
If space is truly such a big issue, consider purchasing one of the new Macbooks that's due out in a few days.

Well the different between the two is the simple fact that one is a notebook and one is a desktop so it's up to you to decide which would work better. If you needed a notebook with the spec of the iMac it will cost a bit more. Of course with the new line coming up there might be price drop/higher spec for current price, so what I just said might change a little. But other than that the reasons to buy a macbook instead of an iMac is the basic laptop vs desktop question (portability vs performance vs prices, etc.)

If you already have a laptop then I think iMac is the way to go. Both have the same OS the only difference is laptop vs desktop. But if you could wait the laptops are gonna get refreshed with the new processor and might get other spec bump that you might like.

If space is a significant issue for you, then a Macbook will obviously save you some room since it has a built in keyboard and a smaller form factor. Otherwise, get the 24" iMac.

There is really no down to the 24-inch iMac other than the obviously higher price than the 20-inch iMac, and the fact that it takes up a bit more space. The 24-inch iMac allows for more powerful components and brings with it a far superior display than the 20-inch iMac :).
