This intermittent display problem started to occur occasionally on boot-up or wake-up almost a year ago, but would usually clear itself in less than a minute. However, over a period of months it appeared with greater frequency (that is, most of the time) and took much longer to clear, sometimes 24 hours or more.

So I took it into the shop (not Apple Store, but authorized dealer) and they replaced the logic board, and all was fine for a month or so.

Then it started all over again, with the same pattern... infrequent failures at first, gradually increasing in frequency.

I took it back to the shop and they told me that they had found a loose wire. (They insisted that they had not mis-diagnosed when they replaced the logic board, and that the fact that the symptoms were identical was coincidence).

It worked fine for a while but now it is doing it again.

The machine is about two years old and has another year left on Apple Care.

    Any thoughts?

Could be a failing GPU, because that has the infamous 8600M GT.
