    Anyone used both?

    I'm kinda over my 2.4GHz 15" MBP.

    Anyone use a 2008 2.8GHz 8-way or a new Nehalem Mac Pro?

    Comments compared to a MBP?

lolz, yeah, I know, I guess I just wanted to see if anyone who has used both can describe how fluid a Mac Pro feels compared to a MBP...

    this helps... haha

top are Mac Pros, bottom is my MBP...

Mac Pros are a lot faster than MBPs! If you use your computer for work like video editing or graphic design, the Mac Pro is a lot faster. That is if you are dead-set on getting a Mac.

Yeah only buy the Mac Pro if you absolutely need osx as you can get a faster pc for literally $2000 cheaper. Also if your interested in allot of 3D work performance, your going to have to buy a video card separate as the ones apple supplies are horrible. Also the ram supplied by apple is pretty weak I think its only 1066MHz and not sure about the quality of the motherboard. So thing is: only buy it if you absolutely need OS X or stick with your macbook pro, it would be a complete waste of money to buy the mac pro unless you need the speed and have the money to spend. Also stay away from 4/8/16 gigs (4x2gigs or 2x4gigs) as the i7 works better with a multiple of three ram sticks (3x2gigs, 6x2gigs)

yeah, the prices are stupid? I'm actually looking at the refurbs -

2.8GHz 8 core "Harpertown" for $2400 ($2250 at LA Computer)
    2.26GHz 8 core "i7" for $2700

and yeah, I priced out a nice home build i7

    $1190 with 1tb drive and 12GB ram and a 4890 1GB...

I have a free/unused license for Vista 64 and have some confidence that Windows 7 will be fairly solid. I also have some Adobe soft ware on Windows that I could upgrade for $1100 and still be under the price of the Mac hardware alone! although I am already running CS4 on Mac and Snow Leopard looks to speed up an 8 core anything quite a bit...

Any chance of a Snow Leopard hardware refresh?

btw, that chart is in seconds!

so, something that takes the new 2.26 8 core 2 minutes took almost 13 minutes on my MBP !!! that's pretty dramatic

the main price difference is that Xeon i7s cost a ton more than standard i7s

1 of the 2.66ghz Xeons used in the Mac pro default costs $969 a newegg right now.... double that for 2, then add from there... its not like Apple could make them cheaper without downgrading from the Xeons. i know many people here will say they are exactly the same or 95% the same and just way too expensive, but you can do your own research on that to see if its worth it to you, because they are not the same as the normal i7s.

any older model refurb you get will not be a i7 based Xeon

EDIT: ok i was looking at the wrong numbers the lower end single processor one stock is 2.66, the stock 2 processor ones is the 2.26 which is only $400... so they could shave some of the profit off of those without changing the hardware
