If I'm going to have a data drive shared between OS X and Windows, what format should I make it? Unfortunately, I can't use FAT32 since I have iso images >4GB.

either use NTFS and install NTFS-3G in OSX.
or use HSF+ and install MacDrive in Windows.

I've had better luck with the latter but MacDrive isn't free.

I agree, I have not had good luck with NTFS-3G.

I'd also take into consideration from which platform you see yourself accessing the drive more frequently.

One other option is something like Airport Extreme which more or less turns a USB drive into a NAS.

depends on which OS you use the most, i would recommend using HFS+ and use HFSExplorer
