I'd choose a 13" Unibody Macbook or Macbook Pro. The 9400 should beat out the X3100 on the older Macbooks/MBAs quite nicely, but a refurb can be gotten for around $900 (with a 1 year warranty still).

If this is your first Mac, don't get an AIR, it's too limited and although it can be used as your main computer it's best used as a companion to your iMac or Macbook Pro. You'd be much better off with a 13" Macbook Pro or even the new unibody white Macbook. If price is a factor then check out the refurbs on Apple's website. http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/mac?mco=MTY0MjUwOTE

Any used Black or White polycarbonate, Intel MacBook will do you just fine.

Yeah, any Intel Macbook will do you good if you're just trying to get your feet wet. I gave my brother the 1.83 MBP last year as his first Mac, and he loves it. Still does fine for the minimalist tasks that he is doing.

One thing to add, I'd be cautious about the previous Core 2 non unibody MBP. The 8600M GT is just as susceptible to heat damage in the Mac world as it is in the Windows PC world.

The 13" unibody MBP would suit you just fine.

Except the OP is looking for "cheap" and "cheap" can be had much cheaper than even a 13" MBP as has already been suggested.

True. Unibody MacBook then - but I'd still be afraid buying one of those: it's plastic (glossy plastic) and I remember seeing quite a lot of those old "CrackBooks" around here. I hope the new unibody plastic enclosure is much sturdier now.

He can also buy an old unibody (aluminium) MB.
