i am new to os x and have leopard 10.5.6. do we have much control over the firewall? coming from windows i try to lock down my computer and get a message (from comodo) if any program or process tries to access the internet, in or outbound. i have noticed that most programs on os x seem to try to check for updates and have internet access. os x firewall is no use if the default is to let everything through. can i lock down osx with its own firewall or do i need something 3rd party?

You can set it to allow only services OS X finds to be essential, or only allow/block specific apps. Go to System Prefs>Security>Firewall to change these settings.
