    Hi

I am getting an external monitor for my MBP in a few weeks.

I will use it for (amateur) photography work and also for technical work with Word and PDF documents... reading on one screen and writing on another.

The Apple monitors look very nice but are very expensive so I am looking for alternatives.

    Particularly:

is there an 'optimum' size for the MBPs possible resolutions and

what resolution would you recommend for this size/type of work?

I have always used two monitors at work but never had to research one before so am something of a dullard in this area :)

Well any resolution will work as long as you are happy with the size of text, images, etc. Dell makes some nice monitors for a reasonable price.

Dell has come out with some AMAZING monitors as of late with their Ultrasharp Widescreen line. I'm using the 24" right now. Best monitor I have ever owned and cheaper than an Apple monitor too!

Dell Ultrasharp Widescreen 24 to 30 inches

This 20 inch is significantly cheaper while still being an Ultrasharp model (the best monitor product line)

    many thanks!

I see that the 24" is only 100Eu less than the Apple 24". I think I might be prepared to go the extra for the brushed alu to match my MBP! :)

22" is the sweet spot for size/price at the moment. in canada they are 40-60% less than the 24" models from the same manufacturer (although the specs are not identical), depending on the brand.

Thanks for that advice. It's difficult to visualise the size... But there is an Apple distributor in Helsinki I'll go and check them out when I arrive (and the Dell's)

    :O)

I am just going to go with a 32" 720p LCD HDTV

I have found a few for about 5-600 which is a bit more than a 22" LCD (around 300) but I think it will be better for movies/games/xbox 360 being a TV and all.

hope its not too big for my dorm :D

I have heard that dell monitors are one of the best as well tho!

22 inch is teh suck. ALL 22 inch monitors use TN panels, the worst of the three main panel types (TN, MVA and IPS). They are also all 6bit panels, instead of the better 8bit panels (better color and no dithering on 8bit). Get a 20" or 24", but NOT a 22 inch.

Did anyone else read this as amateur pornography the first time around, or was I the only one who did a double take.

    Must be my perverted mind...
