I have a bunch of data on a Seagate external HD from my pc running windows xp professional.

I want to move my multimedia stuff from my macbook to the external hard drive. Because my macbook is 1st generation, the hard drive is a puny 60 GB and is getting full.

However since the files on the hard drive are from windows xp and are in the NTFS file format, is there anyway I can overwrite that or erase that and re-use the hard drive in the Mac format?

    Thanks :)

Yeah, when you connect the drive, go to your Disc Utility and you can reformat it.

    Easy as Pi!

Just to make this clear, when you reformat the drive to support the mac file system, ALL the data on that external drive will be lost, you cant just convert from NTFS to mac file sys

One of the few pieces of software I was willing to spend money on for OS X is Paragon NTFS On OS X. It works perfectly and is every bit as fast writing to NTFS as Windows is.

Yea, just to reiterate for others reading the thread - reformatting a drive erases ALL data on it.

But yes, to reformat a drive, just go to Disk Utility, and there should be a Format option in there (not in Mac OS right now so don't know the exact path, but it should be pretty easy to find). You can make it HFS+ (the format for Mac OS), or, if you want Windows computers to be able to read/write to the drive as well, make it FAT32. Note, though, that FAT32 formatted drives can only have files up to 4 GB in size.

I am currently in OSX disk utility, there's 5 options:

First aid, Erase, Partition, RAID, and Restore.

I don't see a Restore to mac file system option.

    where should i go?

thanks a lot, i'm pretty slow on tech.

Here, erase, and when you are choosing what format, choose HFS+ (Journaling) :).
