we have a external dvd/cd drive on our desktop (windows MCE) and i was wondering if i plugged it into my mac to burn a dvd that wouldnt install any drivers or anything like that would it? cus i would only be borrowing it and would still need it to work on the desktop. and also whats some programs that i can use to burn a .mp4 onto a DVD R that can be played on a normal dvd player?

The Mac shouldn't do anything to the drive that would cause it to not work on you desktop again. So I would not worry about that. You may need to install a driver on the Mac in order for the burner to work there, but that should be painless. iDVD should be able to burn an .mp4, but there are others also like Disco and Toast that should both burn an .mp4.
