The title kind of explains it.

My mail server (dreamhost) has had a couple issues sending out mail from clients (thunderbird had some issues on my old PC)

Now however, when i try to send mail to anyone except myself it will not send. This is despite the fact that i have used it to send out mail on other occasions this week(since ive only had it for a week now). Its very annoying i wasnt sure if this email client was mediocre or if these are just more issues i have to complain to my host about

    thanks

ive found mail to be quite good. it never has any problems with my imap account. with my pop account, things can be screwy, but i blame that on my old router and isp cause it wouldn't just be mail that got screwed up on that account.

i would talk to your host about these issues.

Mail works fine for me, I actually prefer it over every other e-mail client I have used.

I agree on the pop as sometimes it can be somewhat weird, however once I checked my ports and stuff and found out with my provider wanted was certain options enabled such as authorization, SSL and the sorts.

I can't wait for the new Apple Mail in Leopard.

On the note of mail, I have a few questions.

If I were using gmail now all I'd have to do is get the POP thing set up and theoretically anything i receive in gmail I should get in Mail (and vice-versa)?

Can you combine email accounts in mail? If so, how do you determine which address you are "sending" from? Or does it matter?

I'm sort of confused on how mail works. You don't need .mac do you? What's the best way to use it? I know there's pop and imap but what exactly is imap?

Yeah, someone just explain mail to me. Like, the whole thing. :D

    Its quite simple.

One of my e-mail accounts I use in Mail is gmail, just follow the instructions that google provides to set it up. I'm not sure what you mean by combine e-mail accounts but you can add multiple accounts and view them all within one window.

As for where you are sending from, when you do a new mail or reply, you can choose from the dropdown box in the new windows which account its being sent from.

No .mac isn't needed. The best way to use it is however way you set it up, mail can be setup in many different ways, you even make smart mailboxes in it as well.

IMAP is generally better than pop and for this reason. When you use an external e-mail client to download from a pop source that mail is deleted from the server once you download it, whereas IMAP its still left on the server so you can still use webmail to view it.

However, in Gmail I believe you can setup the whole pop external mail client to also archive the e-mail after its been downloaded so in a sense its kind of like IMAP with G-mail.

Personally I prefer IMAP over POP.

yeah right now I use gmail, but i've looked at the mail interface (as well as the sneak peak for Leopard Mail) and it looks and feels really good. I just wanted to make sure that I could integrate it with my current mail provider (gmail). If gmail archives and does the lot, it seems like it'll be fine.

What provider do you use that has IMAP?

You might want to check with Dreamhost to see if there are any other problems. I also actually use Dreamhost and have an IMAP account I have set up, and use it regularly with OS X's Mail.app and have had no problems sending mail out or receiving mail or anything else.

If it's not a settings issue (which it would seem not to be, since you said it worked before), then check with your provider. Mail is a good client, I have seen many varying accounts used in it with no issues and I doubt it is the actual cause of your problems.

It could just be bad connection issue between you and the host.

From looking at Dreamhosts stuff, I'm wondering how they are staying in business with all that stuff for so cheap.

I don't think their prices are dramatically cheaper than a lot of other hosts, really. It's such a commodity market now anyway.

One big thing to remember is that even when they offer stuff like unlimited domains, huge amounts of storage and bandwidth, etc. - they know that most customers don't actually use more than a tiny fraction of it.

Either way, I would guess they stay in business because they have a lot of satisfied customers - I've been with them for a number of years and have had an excellent experience with them.
