hey i was just wondering if people who own Macbooks and Macbook Pros have Mac desktops or if they still have a Windows desktop machine.
i'm going to get a MBP and wondering this because the price difference imo isn't too bad for a notebook, and i feel like i'm paying for quality, but a desktop where size and what not is not as much of a problem it's easy to get away with a cheap windows system imo.

I haven't ordered my MBP yet, I'm waiting for Leopard and might just wait for a refresh in January. But my desktop is running Linux (Arch to be specific). It's not a price thing, it probably cost more than your average Mac Pro, it's the versatility of the hardware and software. I'm running a 1.5TB RAID 5 array for the cost of the Mac's RAID card alone (and it's a 3ware), and I was able to choose a very reliable motherboard with solid state capacitors, and design my own extremely quiet cooling system with hard drive and fan suspensions and all.

But, as this system ages and it turns into a dedicated server... who knows. The MBP will be my first Mac since the Macintosh Plus (I just loved how both drives formatted disks when I tried to write), and it might grow on me so that I'll get a Mac Pro or iMac.

Despite the fact that I will soon be the owner of a Macbook Pro, I intend to keep using PC/Windows desktops. It's mostly because of price and that I like custom building my own desktops which you can't really do with a Mac. And when I say custom, I mean picking the exact make & model of every single part. I just don't like the idea of being limited in my hardware choices by Apple or any other PC maker really. I like having the freedom of buying each individual part and building it myself exactly to what I need, nothing more, nothing less. I'd love to be able to do that with a laptop and if I could, I probably wouldn't buy a MBP either, but laptops are much more of a closed platform and even if you buy a whitebook, you are still very limited in your choices.

I'd really like to have a Mac Pro, but I definitely don't have enough money to get one. So for now I have a Windows XP desktop that hasn't been hooked up since I received my MBP.

I am one of those people, who went from the PC laptop to the Mac-world. When the need arises, I'd be more inclined to get a Mac Pro desktop than to stick with a PC.

How upgradeable is a Mac Pro desktop machine? The memory and hard-drive are changeable by default...

Hey dbam, this is totally OT, but I just wanted to give you a heads up on your sig there. Macs don't use Intel wireless cards, they use Atheros cards.

I have a desktop PC and a MacBook. I use Photoshop and gaming on my desktop PC and I use regular web surfing/using Mac programs on the MacBook.

I would love to have a Mac Pro, but it is definitely way too expensive. It is much easier and economical to build your own Windows box.

Meh, it's all good. Happens to all of us. I once had my wireless card listed as a 3495 rather than 3945 for about 4 or 5 months.

I'm running a MacBook and a desktop machine with Ubuntu/XP dual boot (though I almost never use Windows anymore). I've found that, because of the common Unix basis, OSX and Linux play really nicely together, which is good since my Ubuntu machine is, in part, my file and print server.

Except that it has a desktop harddrive, and not a slower notebook one. ;) I still consider it a desktop though.

I still have a Windows and Linux desktop machine, I just never use it :)
I have a Power Mac G4 that stands around playing music for me and not much else, but I guess you could say that means I have a Mac desktop yes.

I want a Mac Mini to replace the PMG4, beyond that I'm not sure - I think I'm good game-wise with the MBP booting into XP for it, but I might get a desktop PC for the purpose again some day. Costs money though, so not for a while yet :p

the only reason i could think of to buy a desktop is to play games. i wouldn't buy a mac to primarily play games.

I am using a MacBook Pro and a 4 year old Dell Dimension 8600 with XP. I actually never use the desktop anymore. It used to be my printer and mouse/keyboard server, but since I got my AirPort Extreme, it only serves up a mouse and keyboard. I do use it for converting home video tape into DVD since I have a Pinnacle box. My next desktop will likely be an iMac, unless I can convince the wife I need a Mac Pro!
