Maybe this is simple, but I can't figure it out.

I use iTunes for my personal music plus internet radio listening. Last night upon retiring everything was normal. This morning when I get up and start to listen to music I noticed a new shared folder/playlist called 'Dellas Limewire Tunes' with music that I never purchased or downloaded. I tried to do the following to delete the folder:
    1. drag the folder to the Trash. No luck
    2. right click folder to find delete option. No luck
    3. highlight the folder and hit the delete button. No luck

I'm out of options, but don't want that folder. Is it possible that someone hacked into my MBP??? How do I get rid of it? How do I stop it from happening again??? I don't share folders and I don't share music..

What is it and how do I get rid of it?????

    Thanks.

you either use limewire, or you are using a neighbors wireless internet and they are using limewire.

best solution: get off your neighbors wifi or remove limewire

you can also try preferences --> sharing --> look for shared libraries

    (uncheck that)

    1. I don't use a neighbor's wifi, I travel a large part of the year and am on hotel's wifi. When I do manage to get home I use my own wireless connection that is highly encrypted.
    2. Forgive my lack of wisdom, but I don't know what Limewire is. It doesn't show up under my Application folder. Where is it so I can delete it?
    3. I don't have the sharing option turned on. My selfish feeling is that my files are mine, not the worlds.

    Thanks for your help...

Limewire is a P2P file sharing network. That's very unusual, if the music isn't yours and you don't even have Limewire in your Mac, to have a playlist show up in iTunes.

While you may not have sharing turned on, iTunes will still look for shared playlists. Be sure that you turn that off. Could someone, a sibling or something, possibly use your computer. If so, they may have installed Limewire. Search for it with Spotlight, if it shows up, there's your problem.

or, if someone else is sharing your network connection and is running limewire, the same thing would happen.

make sure Look for Shared Playlists is turned off in the Sharing section of iTunes/Preferences and that should get rid of your problem, that is wierd that someone would be sharing their limewire playlist, and I find it wierd that people use Limewire at all.

just make sure everything is unchecked in the sharing section and it should go away.

    good luck.

    Ok, problem solved...I think.

In a different hotel and the Limewire file isn't there. I made sure the sharing file option was turned off, made sure the Mac firewall was on, opened iTunes, and no Limewire. The program wasn't on my hd, so it had to have been coming from some other guest in last night's hotel.

Still, that's a panic feeling - to suddenly see someone else's stuff on your computer. Especially a Mac.

Thanks so much for the help, though.

Haha, you haven't experienced the days when your virus scanner picked up viruses on someone else's shared drive on Windows during the old file-sharing days and reports it as if it were on your computer...ah those were the days...

yep just a shared library, someone in that hotel should turn of playlist sharing, people love to steal music that way.

far from having their files on your machine, but now you have learned more about your computer so, Hooray :p

and don't think of it as, especially on a Mac, if someone really wanted to, over an open network like that, could still access your computer if they really really really wanted to, most people have some sort of live, however, so luckily, it isn't a major issue.
