so i've made a decision. i'm going to switch! checked out the screens for one last time, and i liked the macbook the best (even better than the mbp for some reason...maybe it was the lighting, but the backlighting seemed more uniform when i turn the brightness down and the text sharper). so i think i might just wait for leopard and for the update to the mb so i get sr and the new integrated graphics. but i have questions and need advice:

    1. will i be an idiot to get a new macbook slim (if the rumors are true) because it's a first gen product and liable to have issues? or will i be okay as long as i get apple care?

    2. if they don't update the design and only the processor and graphics, what issues are known with macbooks that i should be aware of?...so i know what to look for in case i get a dud. (for example, i know that the mbp has the yellowing issue...i just don't know about issues for the mb.)

    3. i know no one knows, but what are the chances the mb will be updated by the end of the year? i'm just wondering if i should by the current version if it's not likely to be updated for six months.

    4. my mother wants to get a new imac, but aren't there problems with those now, too? what problems should she be aware of? and should she wait to buy one or buy now?

    5. is apple care a wise decision for the imac? or just for laptops?

thanks for all your help with my laptop search!

Its all dependent on how drastic a change it is. If they change the cooling system, mobo, etc. then there is surely a risk. If you do have significant problems Apple will take care of you.

You gotta be kidding. If no one knows, how can anyone tell you? Bottome line is, wait until you absolutely need it, then buy it.

is apple care highly recommended or an unnecessary expenditure, according to most people's experiences?

I highly recommend it. Obviously, if you never have a use for it, its worthless, but when the time comes, you will be really happy to have gotten it. Apple's customer support is truly excellent, and getting AppleCare so you can have access to its support for 3 years is very good.
