Hi all, from your long lost mac newbie (i've been busy playing with Mac, my new BF) ... so question... is there a way to compress (not sure this is the right word) files, particularly large music / media files so I can still play them on itunes etc. but they won't eat up sooo much space.

I'm not anywhere close to being at my hd limit but just wondered...

    thanks

Well, you can certainly convert video files and audio files to a different codec or lower quality settings to save some space, although there will sometimes be a loss in quality when you do so.

It will depend on your own personal tastes, but for example you could re-encode a 192kbps MP3 as a 128kbps AAC file, and probably realize some space savings.

Any sort of straight compression of a media file is usually difficult though, because they are often already in a fairly compressed format (same with image files for that matter).

I've seen utilities that are supposed to be able to convert .rm and .rmvb files to AVI, but I've never used them, so I can't really say for sure how well they actually work.
