The 5 Volts at 500 mA that the iPhone is pulling will have little to no effect on the longevity of your battery.

I thought with the notebook getting warm with the iphone juicing up that maybe it's putting some wear on it

If your laptop is getting hot because it's overexerting itself charging your iPhone, you need to get that checked out.

your laptop does not run on the battery when its plugged into the wall... usually... under normal circumstances all the power for the laptop and USB ports is coming directly from the wall plug. it sometimes uses a bit of battery power if you start maxing it out and it has to draw max power, but thats not that common.

a lot of people think the wall plug is just a charger, and the laptop always runs off the battery and the wall plug just keeps the battery charged, but you can actually run the laptop with no battery in it at all if its plugged in.... if you do do that (on models that have removable batteries) it will underclock your CPU though, just in case, since it doesn't have the battery as backup power.

regardless of all that.. charging your iPhone on USB on your laptop when its plugged into the wall will not affect the battery in your iPhone or your Mac in any noticeable way.

    1) Please do NOT run your Mac with the battery out, and just the wall plug in.
    2) Your Mac's battery won't die faster because you charge your iPhone off it.
2.5) Your Mac's battery won't die faster because you keep it plugged in the wall always, or most of the time.
    3) Your iPhone's battery won't die faster because you charge it off the Mac and not the wall.

When you have the power adapter plugged in your Mac it'll do this:

    - Charge the battery until it's full.
    - Keep the juice going through the computer excluding the battery.
    - Keep a sensor on the battery's charge %.
    - When battery goes down, charge it back up again.

So when you plug your iPhone into your Mac it's pretty much like plugging it in the wall.
