The magsafe power adapter is $99 but it's covered under warranty.

They will replace it at no cost. I'm betting they will do that even if it's out of warranty. They risk way too much bad PR if they pissed off a customer by not replacing it.
Which MBP do you have? I'm curious as I have not heard of a magsafe melting and catching fire since the old CD units. And yeah, mine caught on fire :p luckily I was in the middle of my software class... hehe

Power adapters go bad alot sadly. When I was a third party Apple tech, I would take all the adapters home to use them for components (Apple told us to throw them in the trash, so I was in the clear). By the time I quit I had acquired 30 UFO adapters.

They need to increase the wire gauge to prevent that...

yes, apple should replace your power adapter if you bring it to them.

yes, i agree!!! why the flimsy cable that turns yellow and becomes more flimsy over time

i want a new cable that is properly reinforced and insulated!

btw, modly; do you know if apple even put some kind of insulator/wire-shielding or what not; on their cable?

    and when you say
is it just apple's power adapter, or all brand power adapter?

Yeah, Apple will most likely replace it for you. All power adapters aren't that reliable, really. Tell us how it goes!

I've never heard of a company that has problems with their power adapters like Apple. Fortunately, they will replace it for you, even if you don't have warranty.

Depends on the adapter. Some do, some don't.

As for which power adapters go bad... I've seen more Apple adapters blow out (Because I worked for an Apple authorised repair center), but most power adapters I've found are under-wired. My brother's HP adapter blew up on him, and almost caught on fire. So take that how you want, because I only saw Apple products at my old job, but I've seen other adapters go bad.

first of all let me say APPLE I LOVE YOU!!! drove to apple today went in and walked out three mins later with a charger......yeah it may be a macbook charger but they have promised to get a replacement MBP charger so im using a MB charger in the meantime, but its charging it so all is well :).

AND YES THEY ACTUALLY TOOK MY SITUATION INTO CONSIDERATION SOMETHING IM YET TO EXPERIENCE FROM OTHER COMPANIES *COUGH COUGH DELL*

i mean yes as mac users we pay a little more $$$$ but when it all s**ts up we get bentley style service and in my opinion it is great there is nothing more frustrating than having a computer you cant use for 4 weeks because some lazy b*****d cant organise you a charger.

this is really one of those times that makes you proud to own a "problematic" or "useless" mac, when it goes wrong its sorted without issue.

im one very very happy mac owner!!!!!!!

Yeah, even little things like customer support actually caring for you is worth the extra Mac price :).
