    Like if I wanted 6 gb of ram in a new MBP could I just order a 4 gb module from newegg and pair it with one of the stock 2 gb ones apple puts in?

    Would there be any performance issues with that?

    yes, you can.

    no, there won't be performance issues. just make sure the RAM you order will work in a MBP and you'll be fine. 4GB sticks are available from Newegg that are verified to work for under $170.
