I haven't used an email client for over two years. I use a subscriber email provider (fastmail) that allows me to create folders for my messages online from my browser, so I can access everything from everywhere.

This is great but since getting my mac I am interested to try out some of the features on Mail (syncing with address book, making more nicely formatted messages etc).

If I remember correctly (it's been two years!) when you set up an email client it will normally download the messages from the server, so that they are no longer available to view online via your browser.

Is there a way to set things up so it only downloads a 'copy', leaving me free to continue managing and accessing the browser version when I am not on my macbook?

Are these settings likely to be in Mail, or on my email provider settings, or both??

Very grateful for any pointers, I'm going to try and set it up tonight.

    H.

ummm I don't think it does that

All email clients I use just download the email to your computer, Meaning that it syncs from your inbox to your PC.. does not delete anything

You can maybe set your email account to forward emails to another address that you can use in your email client

But, like I said.. I don't think it deletes anything =\

You should use outlook '07, its really good.. not sure if its available for mac yet though. All the other ones work great too.

of course it's possible! I'm using hotmail and my pop3-mail and it just copies everything from the server to my macbook.

it depends on the options your email provider has with pop3 or whatever you are using, just look in your settings for your email providrs pop3 and that should help you

I don't think there are ever settings on whether it should delete or keep, maybe.. never heard of it

I'm pretty sure it just copys it from there to your PC.

well I think it varies, generally i think it just copies, but when I used to use POP3 I believe my email provider gave me the option to delete messages copied to POP3. But I think for most providers it just forwards the email to your computer and also keeps the original.
