is it really worth the money to get the core2duo over the coreduo? both are dual core processors, but i'm on a budget so the coreduo is mighty appealing.

Unless you need 64-bit support, no.

The marginal difference between the two isn't worth it if you'll just be using the computer for internet, word, music, and some gaming.

Core Duo should be fine for you.

The price difference between the C2D and the CD should be fairly insignificant unless Apple is charging a premium for C2D. Apple is planning to release Leopard Mac OS 10.5 in Spring 2007 which will support the 64-bit architecture. If you can wait, the C2D would be nice.

Applications that have 64-bit memory addressing. 64-bit is the future

Core Duo technology is no longer mainstream. While the C2D will surely last you longer than the CD, you need to ask yourself if you can shell out more $$$ just for a C2D and a nifty 64-bit OS. If you can wait till Q2 2007, when Apple releases the Leopard, then i say get the C2D. Else the CD would do. As Nibbler said, the most notable difference between these 2 CPUs is the 64-bit

if you can afford it, it would be worth waiting until Apple releases the new OS and starts shipping the new MacBook Pro's with it already installed.

The MacBook Pro has been using the same case as the powerbook for a while now. Where as the MacBook is an evolutioned ibook. Do you guys think that Apple has something up their sleeves that'll be launched with Leopord? I have a feeling that together with Leopord, the MacBook Pro might get a serious face lift.

I believe they are returning to the 64-bit architecture with the Leopard

You really won't find much different between C2D and CD. The 64 bit is really meaningless at this point. We won't see 64 bit apps becoming mainstream for years. 64 bit processors have been around for more than 2 years, and Xp-64 has been around for that long, but there really haven't been many apps yet supporting 64 bit.
The major reasons to go with a C2D mac is for the dual layer dvd burner, higher clocked video card (not really useful in your case), support for more memory (in the MBP), and firewire 800. I believe that the refurbs of the C2D are available on the mac site sometimes, so you could wait for that.

Or just wait till the Santa Rosa chipset comes out in a few months.

Leopard will be available in both 64 and 32 bit versions.

If you're on a budget, buy a CD refurb from Apple as refurbs go through quality control twice. Many have sworn by Apple refurbs. Who knows, you may get free upgrades too! Members on MacRumors have purchased refurbs and received 512MB to 1GB RAM upgrades as well as 60 to 80 to even 120GB hard drives all for free :)
