i'm buying an apple macbook pro in september 2nd week which is available for 63k after educational discount!

    13-inch: 2.26GHz
    Intel Core 2 Duo
    2GB Memory
    160GB hard drive
    SD card slot
    Built-in 7-hour battery
    NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics

could anyone give some insight about upgrading the RAM to say 4GB or even more. the guys at the shop says it would cost me about Rs 5000. i read somewhere that i could get it cheaper elsewhere. any suggestions/views would be great.

m using my laptop for photo editing (photoshop), web designing, programming, music- video (not hardcore though)

    thanx

usually its cheaper to shop around on the internet and find the ram yourself.. yes... save money, and also till have the old ram which you can save or sell or whatever you want. Just shop around at online stores that are in (or ship to) Delhi, and see what prices you can find.

its a few screws to remove the entire bottom cover of the laptop, then you'll see the ram and most everything else, and you can swap it out.

you just need the right specification of ram....

    basically its DDR3 PC3-8500 204pin SO-Dimms

a pack of 2 2gb sticks in the US cost around USD $70 - $90 (3427 - 4406 Rs), not sure what pice you can get them for.

4gb sticks cost waaaaay too much, so I wouldnt go for 8gb at this point.

    That ... is EXPENSIVE ... (63K) ...
you would ideally be better off buying ur mac from the US where ur model would come up to effectively 52K ... if you have any friends coming back home .. might be worth while to ask them if they'ld be willing to lug your computer ...
another option might be to use an importer ... i'm not aware of the exact sites unfortunately.
As for RAM, 5000 yet again is a high price for an upgrade to 4GB ... try to visit some of the old delhi electonics stores ... they generally are cheaper than the swanky new stores ... (atleast.. that's the philosophy in Calcutta) ...

i might get it for about Rs 60k after a discount if i buy it through a student here in my college who deals with laptops!

btw, is it worth the upgrade to 4GB RAM?
i'll mainly using it for browsing the net, movies, songs, photoshop (web designing),programming in C,C++, Visual Basic... and a little movie editing (not hardcore of course)

one last question before i buy it (hopefully last):

since i have plans to upgrade the RAM later with another manufacturer, can i use one slot for 2GB RAM now (m buying the base model with 2GB RAM) and leave the other slot open (free) for later? will it affect the macbook pro in anyway? the salesman said i could go for 'one' 2GB RAM stick.

also if i put 4GB RAM stick later (say 2-3 month) + the old 2GB RAM, will there be any effect?

please reply asap. thanx guys in advance.

I was under the impression that if you get the standard 2GB, that it would come in as 2*1 GB. If you are able to get a 1 Dimm 2GB stick, it may not be the original module from Apple. Again, I am not sure if this has been changed in the mid09 updates, but previously I recall the 2GB being as 2 dimms.

You can purchase a 4GB RAM stick later on, but I am not sure if you would need that much RAM for the tasks you mention. Honestly, 2GB should be more than enough, with an upgrade to 4GB giving you a nice cushion. Perhaps if you want to keep this computer for a few years, you can upgrade to 8GB when the prices become a lot cheaper.

well, kinda sorta it will run a bit more efficient and faster with matching pairs. Usually you can only notice it in benchmarks are extremely memory intensive operations.... Apple only normally sells the machines with pairs...

Probably not considering that the promotion ended on Sept. 8, 2009.

    Hi,

I am from Delhi and bought mine a few months ago. I would advise you to buy from RSG Infotech, if possible. Great guys and gave me great support and pre-sales service. Their after sales is also supposed to be very good, I believe.

Anyway, I bought one and had already bought a 500GB WD Blue HDD, which I made their technician replace with the original.
The ram, I got Crucial 2x2GB DDR3 from the UK.

Your old Dell, Lenovo ram will not work as most probably its DDR2.

Don't buy the Macbook Pro from eBay!

If you have any other questions, just ask.

Btw, if you are going to be doing heavy CPU intensive work on it, I would suggest a Mac desktop or even a MBP 15" with a better CPU or higher. Photoshop with big files is not going to be very great on that machine, even with double the ram.
