    is ther a way to use ascii symbols on macbook without having numeric pad?

    I assume you would want to type something like ALT-164 for ñ. On the Mac, the way you get accented characters is to hold down the Alt key, then type a character that displays the accent, then type the vowel or letter that you want to have accented. Alt-E will display an acute accent, Alt-backtick will display a grave accent, Alt-U will display an umlaut, Alt-I will display a circumflex, and Alt-N will display a tilde. So ñ can be typed as Alt-N n.
