I disagree, a smart shopper will look for the features the will use and Apple is pretty good at fully explaining what they are selling with those Guided Tours of their hardware such as the one of the MBA, it fully explains all the ports available and what it lacks and how to overcome it.
If consumers neglect to check out features you can't blame Apple.

Now, I love the MBA, I'm sorry some people don't feel the same way as I do but it's also not cool IMO to trash it and say others are idiots for buying one just because it's not for you.

Wow, talk about double speak. You say that the MBA is inferior because it's lower spec-ed and more expensive. Then you say that there's more to it than specs, and your MBP is good because of Leopard, even though it's lower spec-ed and/or more expensive...Maybe you can see how different things have different value to different people, and that Apple hasn't gone crazy for opening a new target market.

And if you blindly say that Vista is a piece of crap, I'll say the same for MacOSX, and since neither of us have backing, we're even.

The MBA is a cool concept, but the category of people that people say will buy it is kind of off.

I don't think a professional will buy this laptop. I already said who I think will buy this. People will buy this because its cool.

I didn't trash it, I said that it lacks feautres that professionals would use. And others are idiots for buying them, I just think that they are buying it merely to have as a "look at me I have the latest and greatest".

Maybe I'm wrong. But most kids from age 15-25 would buy it for exactly that purpose. I'm in school and people use mac's a lot because they are cool.

I have vista on my desktop and i hate it i dont use the computer anymore, as for macbooks, my mbp is the best computer i have ever used, its strong, feels durable, i hate the way pc's feel, i hate the feel of plastic it cheapens the feel of an item.

were never going to agree i believe mac are the best computers and would bet a great deal that if apple keep doing what they r doing, with exception to this latest creation microsoft will be the lower competitor in the computing world within the next twenty years

That's the most stupid thing I have ever heard. The students only buy Macs because they are cool? What do they use them for then? Better still what do they buy Windows PC's for then?

I don't think Microsoft is too worried about Apple. At this point, they're simple working on software. Apple aims at providing a full product for their customers.

    lemme at 'em...lemme at 'em...

No. We're not turning this into a Mac v. PC debate. We're all sick and tired of those.

I'm glad that you like your MBP. What you have to realize is that other people have different preferences than you do, and what you see as an overpriced, underpowered MBA may be the laptop someone else has been waiting for. We'll wait and see how the machine sells, but I believe it will be a good competitor for its market.

I have to say that personally I'm a bit disappointed in the MBA. I'm not really a Mac fan. I use one daily, but I prefer Windows for most things. That being said I've traditionally really liked Apple hardware and I'm used to Apple pushing the edge forward in that regard, but this just doesn't do it for me.

I'm an ultraportable guy and have been for a number of years, but my ultraportable has always been my only computer. Currently I have a Gateway that is over 5 years old, weighs 2.2lbs, 12.1" screen, and is .9" thick. It also came with a docking slice that has a DVD drive, floppy, a bunch of extra ports, adds about 2lbs and some thickness...but still plenty portable enough to travel with. When it was new I got 5-6hrs out of the standard battery, plus I had two extended batteries that gave me almost 9 hours each. Meaning I could pretty much go 24 hours straight without power...which I had to do somewhat regularly for my job at the time.

So 5 years later Apple comes out with a computer that gets less battery life on a charge, weighs more, loses the ethernet port (which you still need to use in most hotels and businesses, plus how the heck are you supposed to do the initial setup of a wireless network?), doesn't allow the user to replace the battery (so no going 24 hours by switching batteries), has only one USB port (my Gateway has 3 on the machine, and another 2 on the docking slice), and my Gateway cost the same amount 5 years ago with accessories as the base model MBA costs today. For all of this we save .2" in thickness?

I thought the lightest gateway was 3.15lbs. What model do you have?

Edit; and 1" thick at that...

Apple thinks everything they create is the way of the future. I kinda stopped taking them seriously with that.

I am a Mac owner. In my sig I have a SR MacBook, couldn't be happier with it. But I did go for it only because it was the cheapest 13" laptop on the market.

My Asus Eee also doesn't get viruses. It only cost $500.

After reading through this whole thread I simply just have to agree with you. Regardless of the fact whether or not someone could afford to have two computers, who the hell wants to have TWO notebooks? I want one ultra portable to suit my needs. I know that this is totally different, but it reminds me of how I carry around a T-Mobile Sidekick (for email, Instant Messaging, web browsing) and a Verizon cell phone for making calls. It pisses the hell out of me that I have to carry around both.

If you are a business person, do you want to have to go through the trouble of transferring all of your data from your MBA to your other notebook, when Apple could of just got it right the first time around with MBA? I certainly wouldnt want to say, "Oh wait, let me whip out my MBA real fast for this flight ... oh wait, it's dead -- no back up battery. Sh*t." How about the one USB slot, do you only use one USB slot all of the time? The only thing that I can say to this is that maybe the whole Bluetooth thing will become totally necessary for the MBA (for the future). What about now? Not everything is Bluetooth capable, which is why one USB port is not great.

Ok, maybe you can say that the whole ONE USB port and no optical drive is ok in your book, but what about when you run out of battery with no outlet? Good luck with that one. But hey, if this is a great ultra portable for you, then awesome. Im just saying what I think of it and why it wouldnt work for me.

I have a Gateway 200STM. It was made by Samsung I believe and sold by Gateway for only a short time about 5 years ago. The spec sheet says that it is ~3.0lbs, but I just weighed it on my postal scale and came up with 2.4lbs with the standard battery.

this has turned into a ***** fight here, i asked for opinions not arguments, i believed and still believe MBA is crap and arguing isnt guna change it, yes there is a market for the product, i believe it to be college students with too much cash.

hldan, it was a matter of sam saying a fifteen yr old dosent buy a 3k computer, he stated the question a fifteen year old outlaying 3k on a laptop???? so :p it was about the money issue and if you read further on the page you would have discovered that, this thread is now merely an argument, as humans were designed to argue but i have my opinion i figured we could talk about problems/benifits of the MBA but no obviously not

Realize that it's possible to have an incorrect opinion, and don't get defensive when someone points that out. I could have an opinion that the world is flat, should I cry when someone points out a globe? BTW, you can argue the merits of the MBA. So far we've had >5 threads on it already. Get off your high and mighty horse and stop thinking that your opinion is the only one.

Lol @ people saying MacBook Air is aimed at professionals. What type of professional does not use WWAN on an ultraportable? No WWAN on MBA, ROFL.

Honestly, no seriously, it's not that big a deal. The problem lies in MBA's power and price.

for christs sake, i have said there are positives with the MBA, im nont cryig of eiter because nobody has proved anything, i said i hated it ok. fom there it was discussed, just because i said i hate it and personally wouldnt buy it dosent mean i said no one will buy it you jackass.

im entitled to think that the MBA is complete and utter **** if i want to think that. but that dosent say i dont think it will sell. for example take the new subaru WRX hatchback, i hate the car i think the designers have ruined a legend but it is selling large numbers while competing with ford and holden and VW competitors.

i dont think my opinion is the only one, i have merely expressed my opinion on others whom have done one of two things, agreed and said yes i dont like it, or have said your wrong its an awesome computer i cant wait to get one.

if we didnt have different opinions i would hate the world, six billion people like you would be enough to make someone suicidal

Calm down boy. If you were older, I'd throw you a beer to distract you and take your mind off the Macbook Air.

I'd just quit while you're not ahead though. You won't "win" this thread/conversation/argument. You aren't in the target market for the MBA, nor do you understand that there is one.

There are cookies and punch in the lounge, so go enjoy and calm down. It's only the internet.

If Apple stopped making all other notebooks besides the Air, maybe a point or two you made would be vailid. Since they now have a 3 notebook line, just pick another one or move along.
