I've been using adium for sending messages to cells because MSN doesn't support it in OSX and my cell account only has 200 to it and I won't pay anymore for it, the reason I don't like adium is because I keep getting people sending me messages that I don't know and I try to block them but they keep coming, this is a pain in the AS*
So is there another messenger app that I could use in OSX for SMS's
Thanks!

I get those stupid messages, I think it's adiums way of advertising, witch is completely stupid, if you have half a set a brains you would never click links random people that are not even on your contact list send you.

uhh...
ok, adium is free software and is NOT ad supported.
if you are getting random messages it is because someone is sending messages to your screen name on one of the networks you are plugged into. this is not adium's fault and no IM application will change this behavior. -
anyway I'd like to remove the app but it's giving me error messages when I drag it to the trash , I'm in the apps and it says it'll be deleted but it doesn't delete ! -
actually, i know this problem and it has nothing to do with people sending stuff to my screen name, cause when i use windows live messenger under XP i never receive these messages, this spam only appears on adium
to solve this just click on adium on the menubar -> privacy settings -> Allow only contacts on my contact list -
I just got rid of it, I hope, I never got that with MSN, That app s*c*s, I'd rather pay for more sms messages then to have that popping up all the time, apple should get away from them ASAP IMO it'll make a lot of people unhappy IMO -

apple is not affiliated with adium in any way. adium is made by a third party, and is not apple endorsed. Moreover, ANYONE is allowed to develop software for apple's operating system. it is an open system (in contrast to the iPhone, for example, where all software must go through an approval process and meet certain standards). it is up to you, the user, to determine which software meets your standards of use. you can take advantage of reviews, forums, etc to make these decisions.
PS. were you using adium just to connect to the windows live network on the same screen name? it is possible that either you were connected to an additional network that is causing the trouble, or that the windows live client you were using on XP had a "only allow contacts from my contact list" setting that was on by default. i except that this would solve your problem, but if you really hate adium that much definitely don't go through the trouble of using it again. -

I understand that adium isn't part of apple and they are a third party app. But apple has them on there website as a app and supports the download so IMO apple supports this app for there OSX because people want an alternative for an messenger app like MSN which only supports messages and not sms messages thru OSX because microsuc*s in not giving that permission to apple OSX but will allow the messenger part only. -

I searched adium on the apple site and I got a link to version 1.0.4 from 2007 developed for OS 10.3
The current version of adium was released weeks ago 1.3.5 i think, and is for OS 10.5
perhaps this was the source of the problem? -
The problems I have had with Adium spam are all related to MSN. imo you would be well advised to simply remove MSN and use an alternative messenger service like gtalk, icq or ymail.
I'm not sure how they exploit MSN to get the contact names and get the spam out. But it is VERY annoying. -
How about Skype for SMS-ing?
-
I use Adium, but I don't use MSN... and never have any of the problems you are talking of.

it is a problem with either msn in general or his msn username. you'll need to privatize yourself by changing some settings in adium (this was explained in this thread).
it is possible that the other msn client you were using had a similar privacy feature enabled by default. again, this is not a big deal and definitely does not make adium suck.
in my opinion, adium is a stellar IM client. -
I use Gmail to send SMS' it's free.
-
And I only get these messages with Adium. I only use MSN. Adium should change the default settings if that is what causes this annoying problem. -

on the other hand, then users might not receive a message they consider important by someone who just happened to not be on their buddy list yet.
its pretty easy to check a box, but i am sure the adium folks would love to hear your opinion anyway. send them an email. it is free software and its features are based on feedback and user support, among other things. -

its great that you can tell me, but i am sure the adium folks would be more interested than i am.
the real question is:
can you tell them?
anything else besides ADIUM ?
