    Hey folks,
posted a couple days ago about possibly selling my ASUS laptop and getting a MBP...the Apple Canada site has some refurbished MBPs of the version i want up for sale, and I do need to get set up with one and FCP soon as I've got a few corporate vids to get going, but I'm wondering if there's potential for this possible update to the MBPs in june could be anything other than cosmetic?

I don't mind the aluminum look, and the mid-range one is more than fine for my specs (the 2.5Ghz one with 512 MB videocard and such), but I don't want to get one if there's a possibility of some better hardware going in there... i know there was just the update in Feb with Penryn processors and multitouch trackpad and such, so I'm not sure what to expect myself.

Just looking for advice whether i should bother waiting or just take the jump :)

Well, guaranteed is Montevina pretty in June-July-ish, but other than that, its hard to predict. A redesign is due, but that may or may not happen.

what do you mean by a redesign? Would it be something major?

There's always better hardware coming. It's just a matter of when.

Honestly I think June's WWDC's main focus will be the 3g iphone and maybe the mac pro (desktop) or the macbooks new aluminum + led backlit design.

IMHO, I think the macbook pros will get updated this year but later this year probably close to august just before back to school to the refresh to the montevina.

noooo! I was really hoping for a MBP hardware refresh at WWDC. Oh well. I hate ihow apple doesn't release a product roadmap (like intel's).

    thanks for the opinions guys!

Now i'm tech oriented but unfortunately I'm pretty much a layman when it comes to certain things... i really don't know what the whole Santa Rosa/Montevina thing is...

[edit] just checked out on wikipedia... some differences but one i figured was power consumption. probably not a huge deal for me, though i suppose that'll help the CPU to run a bit cooler?

Since it is a pro product and targeted as such it doesn't get refreshed just prior to the school year. That is left to the Macbook product line.

I think the MBP will get the CPU/chipset upgrade in the June/July time frame. Don't be surprised to see a video card change as well (more than just a memory upgrade). I hope there is a hardware rev to refresh the look and get it inline with other Apple products. Sorry but the look has been around too long.

Montevina has minimal improvements, yet again, but it doesn't hurt to have them. By redesign, its highly expected for a redesigned MBP, since the current design has been since the Powerbook G4 Aluminum.

think i've decided to take the plunge and get a refurb penryn MBP. I don't think the minor boosts to various things that the Montevina platform would give are really that critical for me, and i doubt any cosmetic stuff would really matter to me :)
Now i just gotta see if I can find a cheaper copy of FCP studio 2...

From a selling stand point it would be very beneficial for it to be released before college/school starts up. I'm dying on this 7800GS P4 Desktop for a laptop for college. I'm holding out seeing what Apple does with their GPU and other companies. It be very smart to update during buying season at the end of summer. I assume something will be coming then if they want to boost some sales.

I'd say that sounds about right. I doubt we'll see an update in June (June will be the month of the iPhone 2.0 IMO), and likely not in July, but maybe August-September ish. The current MBP is still on the front page of their website, being listed as "The New Macbook Pro".

Will they still be available after the update, and if so, for about how long?
