I'd like to align my desktop icons. I know I can arrange them by type, size, etc., and that'll align the icons, but I don't want to arrange them in that manner. I want to have the icons aligned but arranged my way. I know windows could do that even in the 20th century! Please tell me MAC can handle such a simple request as well...

Click on your desktop, hold in Command and press J, in the little drop down box at the bottom of the window that comes up, select SNAP TO GRID. Afterwards, you can just move your files/folders around into whatever order you desire.

awesome ... now is there a way to make the distance between the folders shorter (so I guess that would mean decreasing the size of the grid?)? RIght now my icons are too apart.

you could change the thumbnail size, then they would be closer by being bigger.

Click on your desktop, hold in Command and press J, drag the slider located below the GRID SPACING label to the left in the window that comes up.

Oh yeah. Grid spacing was removed in Panther, and has now been re-introduced in Leopard. One more reason to upgrade
aligning desktop icons
